SUMMARY:Self-Awareness for Ethical Living with Sunil Joseph
DESCRIPTION:Sunil Joseph leads transformative groups in California prisons\, aiding incarcerated individuals to diminish their reactivity by employing mindfulness and emotional intelligence practices. Join Sunil to discover how these powerful tools can be leveraged to help us live in greater harmony with our moral and ethical values. Explore the profound impact that mindfulness and emotional intelligence can have on aligning our actions with our deepest convictions \nTuesdays\, January 2nd – 30th\n6:30pm-8:00pm \nThis will be a Zoom class only:\nZoom Meeting ID: 224-735-8115\nPasscode: 1234\nZoom Link: https://us04web.zoom.us/j/2247358115 \nNavigating a spiritual path often reveals a gap between our aspirations and the reality of everyday life. Despite our sincere intentions\, we may notice ourselves falling short in living true to our spiritual vows or core values. This could manifest in various ways – perhaps in the unkind words we speak to a loved one\, or in harboring resentments and momentarily wishing harm upon others. Such actions often lead to a cycle of self-judgment and shame\, reinforcing a sense of personal inadequacy or a sense of being flawed in some fundamental way. \nUtilizing the 10 Virtues of Buddhism as a reflective framework\, we will examine our values and how we align with them in our daily actions and thoughts. We will use the practices of Mindfulness and Compassionate Communication to understand\, rather than judge\, the parts of ourselves that seem to veer off the path. This approach offers a constructive way to view our shortcomings. Not as failures\, but as opportunities for deeper understanding and growth\, even as we strive for spiritual and ethical development. Together\, we will discover how to transform our challenges into stepping stones towards a more ethical life. \nwww.diamondlightsac.org/donate or “Diamond Light” on Venmo. Suggested donation: $10-$20 to cover expenses\, which include ongoing rent for our Center\, fees to provide online services and supporting our teachers. No one turned away due to lack of funds. \n\nAbout the Teacher: Sunil Joseph is a certified GRIP facilitator teaching a restorative justice-based healing and accountability program in California’s prison system. In 2021\, he successfully completed the 2-year Mindfulness Meditation Teacher Certification Program offered by Jack Kornfield and Tara Brach to become a certified Mindfulness teacher. He is also a graduate from BayNVC’s 1-year NVC Leadership Program\, and has been using his non-violent communications training to inform his work with inmates in the prisons. Sunil was born in India and now resides in the San Francisco Bay Area. For more information about Sunil: https://myempathycoach.com/

SUMMARY:Online: How Karma Works
DESCRIPTION:Karma: all of our actions and thoughts have inevitable results\, both positive and negative\, for better or for worse. Navigating our lives—and future rebirths—depends on understanding causality: how karma works. Understanding karma is crucial to reaching our goals\, both material and spiritual. In this six-week course\, we will examine what Buddhism teaches us about how our actions create karma and karmic results by looking at selections from Buddha’s teachings. The class will be live online\, with replays and handouts provided. \nTexts we’ll look at include “Kamma: A Study Guide” by Thanissaro Bhikkhu (an anthology of Gautama Buddha’s lectures)\, “Treasure House of Knowledge” (Sanskrit: “Abhidharmakosha Karika”) by Vasubandhu (circa 350 AD)\, and commentary from “Illumination of the Path to Freedom” written by the First Dalai Lama\, Gyalwa Gendun Drup (1391-1474). \nThe non-doing of what is unskillful\,\nthe performance of what’s skillful\,\nthe cleansing of one’s own mind:\nThis is the Buddhas’ teaching.\n-Dhammapada \nTuesdays June 29–August 10\, 2021\, 6:30pm–8pm Pacific time \nClick on the Zoom link to join: https://us04web.zoom.us/j/2247358115 \nCost: Suggested donation of $10-$20 to cover the cost of the class and support the teacher. SUMMARY:Cultivating Meaning\, Empathy and Emotional Awareness
DESCRIPTION:Cultivating Meaning\, Empathy and Emotional Awareness\n5 Tuesdays Feb 7 – March 7 6:30-8:30pm\nWe wouldn’t want a life without the pull of our emotions—whether we are experiencing love and joy or grief and sadness\, our emotions help us navigate our lives\, discern what we need\, and relate to others. Yet\, overwhelming emotions can leave us feeling triggered\, drained\, and unable to engage in the fullness of life. When the pull of our emotions becomes too strong\, we get caught in reactivity when what we truly long for is safety and connection. \nBut we can use our emotional life as a tool for transformation. As we gain a richer understanding of the inner-workings of emotion\, and come to understand how to drop in to our own experiences with awareness and ease\, we create space between stimulus and reaction—expanding our capacity to be with our suffering\, connect with others\, and show up for life. \nIn this experiential training you will learn about contemplative and western scientific approaches to understanding emotions. You will be guided through meditation training in non-distraction and an embodied experience of our emotions. Each gathering will include presentation\, small group dialogue\, guided meditation and personal reflection. Join us\, bring your emotions. \n5 Tuesdays Feb 7 – March 7\n6:30-8:30pm\n1 Saturday\, March 4\n10:00am-1:00pm \nAt Diamond Light Meditation Center\n2791 24th Street\, Room 14 (upstairs)\nSacramento CA 95818 \nAt age 19 Amie Diller stumbled on Tassajara Zen Mountain Center\, dropped out of college\, and embarked on a life-long passion for the study and practice of Buddhism. For the last 15 years Amie has been practicing & teaching internationally in the Tibetan Gelupa Buddhist tradition. Being a certified nurse-midwife and mother have also brought great joy\, along with fertile ground for practicing in the world with a wise and compassionate heart. \nBrandy Davis is a meditation and yoga teacher. She has been studying and practicing for over two decades. Her current passion is restorative justice and working with incarcerated populations. She has a particular knack for personalizing deep philosophical concepts and making them applicable to our modern lives. She teaches with love and humor. Brandy’s greatest joy comes from witnessing the opening of the human heart. \nThe Cultivating Emotional Balance training began during a meeting between behavioral scientists\, a neuroscientist\, a monk\, a philosopher\, and the Dalai Lama in 2000\, as a new approach to understanding our emotional lives. Combining contemporary scientific research with the practices of mindfulness & opening the heart (loving-kindness\, compassion\, joy\, and equanimity)\, this class series offers new tools for working with emotion. \nhttp://bigthink.com/videos/mindfulness-how-to-call-off-the-emotional-attack-dogs-2

SUMMARY:Refuge and the Three Jewels
DESCRIPTION:  \nThe three jewels are the Buddha\, Dharma\, and Sangha. It is by making these the central principles of your life that you become a Buddhist. Join Geshe Tsultrim Tuesday nights 8/2\, 8/9 and 8/16 from 6:30-8:30pm to learn how to take refuge in the Three Jewels. During these classes there will be short mediations and Dharma talks delving into each of the Three Jewels\, and what it means to go for refuge. \nThe Buddha jewel refers both to the historical Buddha and to the ideal of Buddhahood itself. Going for refuge to the Buddha jewel means seeing him as your ultimate teacher and spiritual example and committing yourself to ending the suffering of yourself and all beings. \nThe Dharma jewel means the teachings of the Buddha\, or the truth he understood. The central teachings emphasize the development of mindfulness and kindness\, examining our actions in the light of our ethical values\, and seeing how our thoughts condition our lives. Regarding the Dharma as a refuge means seeing these teachings as the best guide to reality\, and committing yourself to practicing them. \nThe third of the Three Jewels is the Sangha or the spiritual community\, and the people with whom we share our spiritual lives. We need the guidance of personal teachers\, who are further along the path than we are\, and the support and friendship of other practitioners. \nThree Tuesday Nights: August 2\, 9\, 16 from 6:30-8:30pm \nAt Diamond Light Meditation Center\, Sierra 2 Center\n2791 24th St\, room 14 (upstairs)\nSacramento CA 95818 \nNo experience required\, come as you are able\,drop ins encouraged!

SUMMARY:Living With an Open Heart in a Broken World
DESCRIPTION:Welcoming 2016 with a deep breath and an open heart.\nJoin us for the first series of the new year. \nLiving with an OPEN HEART in a broken world. \nA 5-week series\nTuesdays 6:30-8:30pm\nJanuary 5 – February 2\, 2016 \nTaught by Brandy Davis \nDuring this five weeks we will explore our emotions and practice compassion with a meditation we can do on and off the cushion.\nThis will be a fun and interactive series. Each session includes guided meditation\, a presentation and opportunities for discussion. \nUnderstanding our Emotions\nWe will explore the nature of emotions\, our personal triggers\, and methods for transforming destructive emotional episodes into opportunities for enhanced connection.* \n*If you attended the recent Cultivating Emotional Balance weekend with Doug Veenhof – we will be unpacking the emotional episode timeline. If you didn’t attend – not to worry. \nTonglen\, Buddhist Meditation for cultivating love and compassion\nBy embracing\, rather than rejecting unwanted and painful aspects of experience\, we overcome fear and develop greater empathy for ourselves and others. \nPema Chodron says this:\n‘The meditation of tonglen reverses the usual logic of avoiding suffering and seeking pleasure and\, in the process\, we become liberated from a very ancient prison of selfishness.’ \nLocation\nRiversong Meditation\, Sierra 2\n2791 24th St (Upstairs\, room 14)\n(converted elementary school in Curtis Park)\nSacramento \nCost\nfree*\n*Donations are welcome to help cover the cost of the space \nNote from Brandy\,\nHi all\, I’m really excited for this series. I have been volunteering in prisons for the last few years teaching yoga and mindfulness and leading a restorative justice circle. One of the tag lines of the program is\, ‘hurt people\, hurt people’. This rings true even for those of us merely serving time in the prison between our ears. My hope is that our time together will foster personal healing\, so that we can make manifest a second idea\, ‘healed people\, heal people’. \nIf you have any questions or concerns\, please don’t hesitate to contact me:\nbrandynadavis@gmail.com or 530-208-8335
