SUMMARY:Letting Go of Fear and Judgement in a World Gone Mad
DESCRIPTION:Our culture is experiencing a breakdown of civility because of heightened fear. Dualistic\, in-group/out-group thinking is tearing our society apart. We are faced with necessary but difficult conversations about racism and sexism. In order to navigate this cultural moment\, we need people who are spiritually evolved and able to keep their hearts open and supple in the midst of fear and violence. This class will look at spiritual practices that can help us live in love with the world\, regardless of the craziness and cruelty around us. \nYou will leave with a better understanding of how fear and judgement function in our lives and be empowered to live with less fear and more open to everyone\, particularly those who we see as different from ourselves\, or even threatening. \nTuesdays 6:30p-8:30p\nNov 29\, Dec 6\, Dec 13\nDonations Welcomed \nThis class is appropriate for all levels. \nBrian Baker is an Episcopal Priest and the Dean of Trinity Cathedral in Sacramento. He began meditating long before he ever entered a church. He has a long history of teaching with Tibetan Buddhists. In 2005 he organized and facilitated a conversation between the Dalai Lama and religious leaders in Idaho. He is a popular speaker at wellness and yoga festivals.

SUMMARY:Recipe for Happiness: A Spiritual Life Day by Day
DESCRIPTION:Many people think of those having a spiritual life living away from the modern world\, entrenched in solitude and study. It is possible to lead a fulfilling spiritual life within the lives we currently lead. Heather Breault will lead us into the New Year by discussing how to lead a spiritual life each day and what we can do to set ourselves up for success! This class is applicable to all spiritual traditions\, but will be taught from a Tibetan Buddhist perspective. \nTuesday December 27\, 6:30-8:30pm\nat Diamond Light Meditation Center\n271 24th Street\, Room 14 (upstairs)\nSacramento\, CA 95818\nhttps://www.diamondlightsac.org \nAll classes are donation based\, drop ins welcome! \nHeather started practicing yoga in 2001 and finished her teacher training in 2008. Yoga is what led her to Buddhism\, with her first class taught by Lama Marut in 2008. She has studied with many amazing teachers over the years\, her closest teacher being Amie Diller. Heather’s passion is the Tibetan Gelugpa tradition\, in the lineage of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. She recently finished a six year\, eighteen course intensive and is excited to share these classes with others. \nHeather grew up in Northern California and received her Bachelor of the Arts in Communication at San Diego State University. She also has an Associate of the Arts degree in Visual Communication from the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising.

SUMMARY:Creating a Bright Future
DESCRIPTION:Create a strong intention and vision for your New Year. You will leave with a written statement\, bullet points\, or a paragraph\, of your personal vision and intention for the New Year. You will learn how to incorporate this vision into a meditation practice that can be used to reset your intentions and aspirations throughout the year. \nDuring the first night you will learn the 4-Fold Vision Quest to create a full and hopeful vision of your new year\, and beyond. There will be time to journal and then meditate/envision this image and story of how the New Year will unfold. Everything from our highest aspirations to our worldly goals will be included in this vision. \nDuring the second night you will take this new vision and apply it to the practices of the 4-Immeasurables (loving kindness\, compassion\, feeling joy for others\, and equanimity). You will learn how to extract the meaning and essence of the 4 Immeasurables and apply them to what is most important and relevant in your life. This is a method of personalizing the 4 Immeasurables so that this practice will stay fresh and relevant for years to come. \nBeginners and experienced students are welcome.

SUMMARY:Got Empathy? Communicating from the Heart
DESCRIPTION:Empathy dispells separation and other-ness by connecting us to our shared humanity. The ability to “feel with” another is an important precursor for compassion. Join Sunil Joseph as we explore the use of Nonviolent Communication (NVC) to cultivate empathy in our relationships – with self and other. No prior knowledge of NVC is necessary and all are welcome! Drop ins to either class are welcome. \nTwo Tuesdays March 14th and March 21st\n6:30pm-8:30pm\nCost: Donation Based \nAt Diamond Light Meditation Center\n2791 24th Street\, Room 14 (upstairs)\nSacramento\, CA 95818\nparking lot in back \nFor more information: https://www.diamondlightsac.org \nAbout Sunil: I started studying Nonviolent Communication (NVC) with Itara O’Connell in 2004. After attending NVC practice groups with Itara for a few years\, I attended the year-long NVC Leadership Program in 2008 with Bay NVC in Oakland. NVC continues to have a transformational effect on my professional and personal life\, along with other practices like movement\, meditation\, etc. It has deepened the quality of relationships in my life\, with myself and others. After all these years of exploring this work\, I am still amazed at the power and simplicity this approach offers for meeting challenging experiences and interactions in a skillful way. While I am not a certified NVC trainer\, I feel happy when I can contribute to other’s wellbeing by sharing the fruits of my personal practice. I consider myself a lifelong NVC learner and explorer.

SUMMARY:Compassionate Communication: A Language for a Compassionate Life
DESCRIPTION:Communicating with others can be extremely rewarding\, or extremely frustrating. A family member upsets us and we become angry and say things we regret. We see our friend sad from a loss and don’t know what to say. Learning the techniques of compassionate communication can create a better connection with others and ourselves and support us in using skillful ways to meet difficult internal and external experiences. \nThis series will start with the foundational principles and philosophy of Non-Violent Communication (NVC) and its communication model. We will learn how to tune into what we need in a respectful\, non-judgmental way. We will explore how we can invite others to contribute to us from a place of connection\, from where we can honor both their “yes” and “no” in relation to our needs. We will practice transforming enemies (individuals\, groups) into humans with needs just like us. We will learn how to use NVC in our everyday lives to foster compassion and respect. \nClasses will be a combination of information sharing combined with experiential exercises to explore how the information fits into each person’s life. You will leave with skills including increased self-awareness\, listening\, emotional intelligence\, and empathy. \n4 Mondays May 8 – May 29 6:30pm-8:30pm \nat Diamond Light Meditation Center\n2791 24th Street\, Room 14 (upstairs)\nSacramento CA 95818 \nCost: Donation Based\nADA Accessible\, message for more info! \nhttps://www.diamondlightsac.org \nAbout Sunil: I started studying Nonviolent Communication (NVC) in 2004. SUMMARY:The Path to Awakening: An Introduction
DESCRIPTION:The Buddha gave us clear instructions on the path to enlightenment\, and all of the teachings of Buddhism can be found within the Lam Rim or “Steps on the Path”. It would take years of study to share the full depth of the Lam Rim\, but this class will provide an overview of the various aspects of the Lam Rim and the teachings embedded within them. \nTaking this class will provide students with a stable foundation upon which to build their knowledge as they continue studying Buddhism. Some students will also find the Lam Rim to be a helpful template in understanding the breadth of the teachings and in identifying areas upon which to focus future studies. \nThis is an introductory class tailored for beginners\, yet all levels of practitioner would likely find the review helpful. \nThis class will include meditation\, dharma talk\, discussion and prayers. There will be handouts including the long and short Lam Rim meditations we will do in class that can be practiced at home! \nTuesday September 5\, 6:30-8:30pm\nDiamond Light Meditation Center\n2791 24th Street\, Room 14 (upstairs)\nSacramento CA 95818\nparking lot in back\, ADA accessible \ncost: Donations Welcome \nFor more info: www.diamondlightsac.org
