SUMMARY:Community Meditation
DESCRIPTION:Community Meditation is a new offering from Diamond Light Meditation Center beginning June 1st and will be ongoing Thursday nights! All levels are welcome! Learn to meditate and develop a meditation practice in a supportive community. \nMeditation helps us to calm the mind\, develop concentration\, and reduce stress. We will explore various types of meditation in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition\, such as analytical and placement meditation. Analytical meditation deepens our understanding of the Dharma through exploring subjects on the lam rim (stages of the path). Placement\, or concentration (“calm abiding”)\, allows the practitioner to stay on their “object”\, and to deepen realizations. \nJoin members of our community for meditation practice and discussion. \nThursdays 6:30pm-8:00pm\nat Diamond Light Meditation Center\n2791 24th Street\, Room 14 (upstairs)\nSacramento\, CA 95818\nparking lot in back\, ADA accessible \ncost: Donation Based \nhttps://www.diamondlightsac.org

SUMMARY:Non Violent Communication Study Group
DESCRIPTION:This will be the final class of the series. All are welcome. \nCommunicating with others can be extremely rewarding\, or extremely frustrating. A family member upsets us and we become angry and say things we regret. We see our friend sad from a loss and don’t know what to say. Learning the techniques of compassionate communication can create a better connection with others and ourselves and support us in using skillful ways to meet difficult internal and external experiences. \nThis series will start with the foundational principles and philosophy of Non-Violent Communication (NVC) and its communication model. We will learn how to tune into what we need in a respectful\, non-judgmental way. We will explore how we can invite others to contribute to us from a place of connection\, from where we can honor both their “yes” and “no” in relation to our needs. We will practice transforming enemies (individuals\, groups) into humans with needs just like us. We will learn how to use NVC in our everyday lives to foster compassion and respect. \nClasses will be a combination of information sharing combined with experiential exercises to explore how the information fits into each person’s life. You will leave with skills including increased self-awareness\, listening\, emotional intelligence\, and empathy. \n4 Mondays May 8 – May 29 6:30pm-8:30pm \nat Diamond Light Meditation Center\n2791 24th Street\, Room 14 (upstairs)\nSacramento CA 95818 \nCost: Donation Based\nADA Accessible\, message for more info! \nhttps://www.diamondlightsac.org \nAbout Sunil: I started studying Nonviolent Communication (NVC) in 2004. NVC has had a transformational effect on my professional and personal life. I am continually amazed at the power and simplicity of this way of living life. While I am not a certified NVC trainer\, I am happy when the fruits of my personal practice can benefit others. I consider myself a lifelong NVC learner and explorer.

SUMMARY:Got Empathy? Communicating from the Heart
DESCRIPTION:Empathy dispells separation and other-ness by connecting us to our shared humanity. The ability to “feel with” another is an important precursor for compassion. Join Sunil Joseph as we explore the use of Nonviolent Communication (NVC) to cultivate empathy in our relationships – with self and other. No prior knowledge of NVC is necessary and all are welcome! Drop ins to either class are welcome. \nTwo Tuesdays March 14th and March 21st\n6:30pm-8:30pm\nCost: Donation Based \nAt Diamond Light Meditation Center\n2791 24th Street\, Room 14 (upstairs)\nSacramento\, CA 95818\nparking lot in back \nFor more information: https://www.diamondlightsac.org \nAbout Sunil: I started studying Nonviolent Communication (NVC) with Itara O’Connell in 2004. After attending NVC practice groups with Itara for a few years\, I attended the year-long NVC Leadership Program in 2008 with Bay NVC in Oakland. NVC continues to have a transformational effect on my professional and personal life\, along with other practices like movement\, meditation\, etc. It has deepened the quality of relationships in my life\, with myself and others. After all these years of exploring this work\, I am still amazed at the power and simplicity this approach offers for meeting challenging experiences and interactions in a skillful way. While I am not a certified NVC trainer\, I feel happy when I can contribute to other’s wellbeing by sharing the fruits of my personal practice. I consider myself a lifelong NVC learner and explorer.

SUMMARY:Creating a Bright Future
DESCRIPTION:Create a strong intention and vision for your New Year. You will leave with a written statement\, bullet points\, or a paragraph\, of your personal vision and intention for the New Year. You will learn how to incorporate this vision into a meditation practice that can be used to reset your intentions and aspirations throughout the year. \nDuring the first night you will learn the 4-Fold Vision Quest to create a full and hopeful vision of your new year\, and beyond. There will be time to journal and then meditate/envision this image and story of how the New Year will unfold. Everything from our highest aspirations to our worldly goals will be included in this vision. \nDuring the second night you will take this new vision and apply it to the practices of the 4-Immeasurables (loving kindness\, compassion\, feeling joy for others\, and equanimity). You will learn how to extract the meaning and essence of the 4 Immeasurables and apply them to what is most important and relevant in your life. This is a method of personalizing the 4 Immeasurables so that this practice will stay fresh and relevant for years to come. \nBeginners and experienced students are welcome.

SUMMARY:Letting Go of Fear and Judgement in a World Gone Mad
DESCRIPTION:Our culture is experiencing a breakdown of civility because of heightened fear. Dualistic\, in-group/out-group thinking is tearing our society apart. We are faced with necessary but difficult conversations about racism and sexism. In order to navigate this cultural moment\, we need people who are spiritually evolved and able to keep their hearts open and supple in the midst of fear and violence. This class will look at spiritual practices that can help us live in love with the world\, regardless of the craziness and cruelty around us. \nYou will leave with a better understanding of how fear and judgement function in our lives and be empowered to live with less fear and more open to everyone\, particularly those who we see as different from ourselves\, or even threatening. \nTuesdays 6:30p-8:30p\nNov 29\, Dec 6\, Dec 13\nDonations Welcomed \nThis class is appropriate for all levels. \nBrian Baker is an Episcopal Priest and the Dean of Trinity Cathedral in Sacramento. He began meditating long before he ever entered a church. He has a long history of teaching with Tibetan Buddhists. In 2005 he organized and facilitated a conversation between the Dalai Lama and religious leaders in Idaho. He is a popular speaker at wellness and yoga festivals.

We will begin to understand these needs\, the difference between needs and strategies\, and gain an experiential taste of the practice of connecting with each other’s needs and the possibility of shifting from judgement to connection. \nWho is this class for?\nAll levels. Anyone who has an interest in better connection with themselves and others. Also relevant for those interested in skillful ways to meet difficult internal and external experiences. \nAbout the teacher\, Sunil Joseph:\nI started studying Nonviolent Communication (NVC) with Itara O’Connell in 2004.

SUMMARY:Meditation: Why and How
DESCRIPTION:Meditation is very practical. It is the cultivation of deep sanity through the art of relaxation\, stillness\, and vigilance leading to deeper and deeper states of inner knowledge. It affords us the opportunity to take an intimate look at our mind – up close and personal. What is it? How does it function? Where do thoughts come from? Are thoughts “real”? How do they change? How do they create our world? \nBy learning to meditate\, we begin to cultivate the awareness necessary to make wise choices\, to create a happy future by thinking and acting wisely. Join Elaine Jackson for this workshop where we will discuss some effective methods for beginning a meditation practice and for overcoming difficulties in an already existing practice – how to persevere when the going gets rough. \nThis class is for anyone who has an interest in meditation\, whether they already have an established practice or are brand new. By maintaining an attitude of childlike wonder\, we can always learn something new. When we practice together we learn from each other. \nThursday 9/29 6:30-8:00pm \nAt Diamond Light Meditation Center\n2791 24th Street\, Room 14 (upstairs)\nSacramento\, CA 95818 \nhttps://www.diamondlightsac.org\nDonations welcome \nElaine Jackson is a founding member of Vajrapani Institute and has been a student of Tibetan Buddhism since 1977\, studying with many of the greatest Buddhist teachers of our time. SUMMARY:Green Tara Mandala Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Mandala means “that which extracts the essence.” There are many different types of mandalas utilized in Tibetan Buddhism. The mandala represents the architectural layout of the entire palace of a specific deity. The Menla mandala\, for example\, represents the dwelling of the Medicine Buddha\, who embodies the perfection of the physical and mental health of all beings. There are mufti-layered symbolic images throughout the “palace\,” where iconography\, placement\, and color all have significance. Mandalas can be created in either two or three dimensions. In this workshop Geshe Tsultrim will instruct on the drawing and painting of a two-dimensional mandala. \nDuring the first day\, Geshela will demonstrate the mathematical technique of drafting a Mandala and assist students in mapping and drafting of a simple mandala. On the second day\, if we have time Geshela will then review everyone’s draft\, offer a discussion on the use of color and demonstrate various techniques for the actual painting of the mandala. Everyone will have the opportunity to work directly with Geshela. Mandala paintings can take as many as 100 hours to complete. In view of this – this workshop is intended as an overview. Participants will not complete there Mandala during the workshop but will be supplied with information to support completion on their own time. \nWorkshop Registration:\n2-Day Mandala Workshop\nSaturday and Sunday 8/20-8/21 10:00am-4pm (with break for lunch)\n$95 for both days (preregistration required)\nat Diamond Light Meditation Center\n2791 24th Street\, Room 14 (upstairs)\nSacramento CA 95818 \nWhat to bring:\nCompass\n18” metal ruler (if you have one)\nGood drafting pencil and erasers\nAny mechanical drafting tools that may be helpful for measurement.
