SUMMARY:Compassionate Communication Practice Group
DESCRIPTION:2nd and 4th Mondays 6:30pm-8:30pm (ongoing) \nCommunicating with others can be extremely rewarding\, or extremely frustrating. A family member upsets us and we become angry and say things we regret. We see our friend sad from a loss and don’t know what to say. Learning the techniques of compassionate communication can create a better connection with others and ourselves and support us in using skillful ways to meet difficult internal and external experiences. \nEach session we review the foundational principles and philosophy of Non-Violent Communication (NVC) and its communication model. We will learn how to tune into what we need in a respectful\, non-judgmental way. We will explore how we can invite others to contribute to us from a place of connection\, from where we can honor both their “yes” and “no” in relation to our needs. We will practice transforming enemies (individuals\, groups) into humans with needs just like us. We will learn how to use NVC in our everyday lives to foster compassion and respect. \nEach session will be a combination of information sharing combined with experiential exercises to explore how the information fits into each person’s life. You will leave with skills including increased self-awareness\, listening\, emotional intelligence\, and empathy. \nat Diamond Light Meditation Center\n2791 24th Street\, Room 14 (upstairs)\nSacramento CA 95818\nADA accessible\, parking lot in back \nsuggested donation: $10-$20 per class\, no one turned away for lack of funds

SUMMARY:Introduction to Compassionate Communication
DESCRIPTION:Introduction to Compassionate Communication \nSaturday\, Oct 21; 10:00 am – 3:30 pm (includes 90 minute lunch break) \nHow do we stay connected to the innate goodness of our basic human nature in the midst of challenging times? Can I make the world a kinder place by changing how I communicate? In this class\, we will introduce the principles and practices of Nonviolent Communication (NVC) to cultivate empathy and compassion. No prior knowledge of NVC is necessary. All are welcome. \nWe will introduce the fundamentals of NVC – Observations\, Feelings\, Needs\, and Requests. We will introduce core NVC distinctions that lead to our freedom:\n– observations vs judgement\n– feelings vs thinking\n– needs vs strategies\n– requests vs demands \nWe will bring non-judgmental awareness to our current communication strategies. We will use NVC tools to shift our attention from right-wrong/reward-punishment thinking to a human needs-centric view. We will introduce practices for cultivating greater felt awareness of our inner world and also learn how to compassionately listen and receive others. We will explore ways to respectfully ask for what we want while also including the other person’s needs. \nTo quote the Dalai Lama – “If you want others to be happy\, practice compassion. If you want to be happy\, practice compassion.” \nAt Diamond Light Meditation Center\n2791 24th Street\, Room 14 (upstairs)\nSacramento CA 95818\nparking lot in back\, ADA accessible \ncost: $20-$60\, no one turned away for lack of funds\nTo register: email diamondlight.sac@gmail.com\npay at the door\, or to pay online: http://www.diamondlightsac.org/donate/\nscholarships available! email for more info

SUMMARY:Cutting Through to Pristine Awareness
DESCRIPTION:Cutting Through to Pristine Awareness: Foundations in Dzogchen Meditation\nwith Doug Veenhof \nTwo weekends: 9/9-9/10 and 9/16 and 9/17 from 12:30-5:30pm each day.\nThe weekends will build on each other\, but feel free to come as you are able. \nMeditation is the tool we use to look at our minds\, cutting through the fog of our thoughts and getting to the pristine awareness that is inherent in all of us. \nThis 22-hour immersion in Dzogchen meditation and view will cover the essential preliminary attitudes to set up a successful meditation practice. Doug will cover a full range of shamatha practices for developing meditation stability and vividness through single pointed focus\, and the vipashyana meditations that power the insights that cut through illusory appearances to pristine awareness. \nConveniently scheduled on two consecutive weekends\, this program provides the transformative intensity of retreat with the casual flexibility and interaction of a workshop. \nThe program segments include talks that include practical meditation instruction and tips suitable for all experience levels as well as explorations of the exhilarating philosophy that underpins the Dzogchen Buddhist view of consciousness and the world of experience. Each segment is anchored by a 24-minute meditation that integrates the view into a comprehensive progression of practices to take home with you. \nTopics include: The Three Thoughts that Turn the Mind; Adding a Mute Switch to the Ruminating Mind with Breath Meditation; Structures of Consciousness; Taking Mental Appearances as the Object of Meditation; Can “I” Be Found; The Empty Nature of the Mind; and Spontaneous Presence.

SUMMARY:The Life & Mystery of Theos Bernard - Evening Talk & Book Signing
DESCRIPTION:With author Doug Veenhof \nTuesday 9/12\, 6:30–8:30pm\nat Diamond Light Meditation Center\n2791 24th Street\, Room 14 (upstairs)\nSacramento\, CA 95818\nparking lot in back\, ADA accessible \nSuggested donation: $10-$20\, no one turned away for lack of funds \nJoin us for a captivating evening as Doug takes us on a photographic journey through time to Lhasa\, Tibet at the zenith of its Buddhist history. These rarely seen images were shot by Theos Bernard (1908-1947)\, one of the earliest Western explorers of Yoga and Tibetan Buddhist culture\, on his historic journey to Lhasa in 1937. \nAt a time when Tibet’s borders were famously sealed to outsiders\, all of Lhasa’s secret temples and shrines were opened to him\, and Theos Bernard became the first Westerner ever initiated into Tantric practices by Tibet’s highest lamas. \nSelected from what has been described as the best photographic collection of old Tibet in existence\, these images and the adventures they illustrate document an inside view of a now vanished culture. \nDoug Veenhof is an award-winning journalist\, author\, and close student of scholar\, translator\, and master practitioner B. Alan Wallace. Doug is a certified trainer in Cultivating Emotional Balance (CEB)\, a meditation and emotional fluency program created at the request of HH the Dalai Lama by B. Alan Wallace and affective psychologist Paul Ekman. Doug leads workshops and retreats around the world on CEB\, shamatha\, vipashyana\, and Dzogchen.\nwww.douglasveenhof.com

SUMMARY:The Path to Awakening: An Introduction
DESCRIPTION:The Buddha gave us clear instructions on the path to enlightenment\, and all of the teachings of Buddhism can be found within the Lam Rim or “Steps on the Path”. It would take years of study to share the full depth of the Lam Rim\, but this class will provide an overview of the various aspects of the Lam Rim and the teachings embedded within them. \nTaking this class will provide students with a stable foundation upon which to build their knowledge as they continue studying Buddhism. Some students will also find the Lam Rim to be a helpful template in understanding the breadth of the teachings and in identifying areas upon which to focus future studies. \nThis is an introductory class tailored for beginners\, yet all levels of practitioner would likely find the review helpful. \nThis class will include meditation\, dharma talk\, discussion and prayers. There will be handouts including the long and short Lam Rim meditations we will do in class that can be practiced at home! \nTuesday September 5\, 6:30-8:30pm\nDiamond Light Meditation Center\n2791 24th Street\, Room 14 (upstairs)\nSacramento CA 95818\nparking lot in back\, ADA accessible \ncost: Donations Welcome \nFor more info: www.diamondlightsac.org

SUMMARY:Community Meditation
DESCRIPTION:Each Thursday from 6:30pm-8:30pm \nCommunity Meditation is a new offering from Diamond Light Meditation Center beginning June 1st and will be ongoing Thursday nights! All levels are welcome! Learn to meditate and develop a meditation practice in a supportive community. \nMeditation helps us to calm the mind\, develop concentration\, and reduce stress. We will explore various types of meditation in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition\, such as analytical and placement meditation. Placement\, or concentration (“calm abiding”)\, allows the practitioner to stay on their “object”\, and to deepen realizations.\nThose new to meditation will learn enjoy learning how to start a practice\, and experienced practitioners will enjoy the support of sitting with a group. \nJoin members of our community for meditation practice and discussion. If you are new to meditation\, come learn how to start your practice\, meet experienced practitioners\, and enjoy the community of group meditation. SUMMARY:Community Meditation
DESCRIPTION:Community Meditation is a new offering from Diamond Light Meditation Center beginning June 1st and will be ongoing Thursday nights! Analytical meditation deepens our understanding of the Dharma through exploring subjects on the lam rim (stages of the path). Placement\, or concentration (“calm abiding”)\, allows the practitioner to stay on their “object”\, and to deepen realizations. \nJoin members of our community for meditation practice and discussion. \nThursdays 6:30pm-8:00pm\nat Diamond Light Meditation Center\n2791 24th Street\, Room 14 (upstairs)\nSacramento\, CA 95818\nparking lot in back\, ADA accessible \ncost: Donation Based \nhttps://www.diamondlightsac.org

SUMMARY:Non Violent Communication Study Group
DESCRIPTION:This will be the final class of the series. All are welcome. \nCommunicating with others can be extremely rewarding\, or extremely frustrating. A family member upsets us and we become angry and say things we regret. We see our friend sad from a loss and don’t know what to say. Learning the techniques of compassionate communication can create a better connection with others and ourselves and support us in using skillful ways to meet difficult internal and external experiences. \nThis series will start with the foundational principles and philosophy of Non-Violent Communication (NVC) and its communication model. \nClasses will be a combination of information sharing combined with experiential exercises to explore how the information fits into each person’s life. You will leave with skills including increased self-awareness\, listening\, emotional intelligence\, and empathy. \n4 Mondays May 8 – May 29 6:30pm-8:30pm \nat Diamond Light Meditation Center\n2791 24th Street\, Room 14 (upstairs)\nSacramento CA 95818 \nCost: Donation Based\nADA Accessible\, message for more info! \nhttps://www.diamondlightsac.org \nAbout Sunil: I started studying Nonviolent Communication (NVC) in 2004. NVC has had a transformational effect on my professional and personal life. I am continually amazed at the power and simplicity of this way of living life. While I am not a certified NVC trainer\, I am happy when the fruits of my personal practice can benefit others. I consider myself a lifelong NVC learner and explorer.

SUMMARY:Compassionate Communication: A Language for a Compassionate Life
DESCRIPTION:Communicating with others can be extremely rewarding\, or extremely frustrating.
