SUMMARY:Community Meditation
DESCRIPTION:Community Meditation is a new offering from Diamond Light Meditation Center beginning June 1st and will be ongoing Thursday nights! All levels are welcome! Learn to meditate and develop a meditation practice in a supportive community. \nMeditation helps us to calm the mind\, develop concentration\, and reduce stress. We will explore various types of meditation in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition\, such as analytical and placement meditation. Analytical meditation deepens our understanding of the Dharma through exploring subjects on the lam rim (stages of the path). Placement\, or concentration (“calm abiding”)\, allows the practitioner to stay on their “object”\, and to deepen realizations. \nJoin members of our community for meditation practice and discussion. \nThursdays 6:30pm-8:00pm\nat Diamond Light Meditation Center\n2791 24th Street\, Room 14 (upstairs)\nSacramento\, CA 95818\nparking lot in back\, ADA accessible \ncost: Donation Based \nhttps://www.diamondlightsac.org

SUMMARY:Non Violent Communication Study Group
DESCRIPTION:This will be the final class of the series. All are welcome. \nCommunicating with others can be extremely rewarding\, or extremely frustrating. A family member upsets us and we become angry and say things we regret. We see our friend sad from a loss and don’t know what to say. Learning the techniques of compassionate communication can create a better connection with others and ourselves and support us in using skillful ways to meet difficult internal and external experiences. \nThis series will start with the foundational principles and philosophy of Non-Violent Communication (NVC) and its communication model. We will learn how to tune into what we need in a respectful\, non-judgmental way. We will explore how we can invite others to contribute to us from a place of connection\, from where we can honor both their “yes” and “no” in relation to our needs. We will practice transforming enemies (individuals\, groups) into humans with needs just like us. We will learn how to use NVC in our everyday lives to foster compassion and respect. \nClasses will be a combination of information sharing combined with experiential exercises to explore how the information fits into each person’s life. You will leave with skills including increased self-awareness\, listening\, emotional intelligence\, and empathy. \n4 Mondays May 8 – May 29 6:30pm-8:30pm \nat Diamond Light Meditation Center\n2791 24th Street\, Room 14 (upstairs)\nSacramento CA 95818 \nCost: Donation Based\nADA Accessible\, message for more info! \nhttps://www.diamondlightsac.org \nAbout Sunil: I started studying Nonviolent Communication (NVC) in 2004. NVC has had a transformational effect on my professional and personal life. I am continually amazed at the power and simplicity of this way of living life. While I am not a certified NVC trainer\, I am happy when the fruits of my personal practice can benefit others. I consider myself a lifelong NVC learner and explorer.

SUMMARY:Compassionate Communication: A Language for a Compassionate Life
DESCRIPTION:Communicating with others can be extremely rewarding\, or extremely frustrating. While I am not a certified NVC trainer\, I am happy when the fruits of my personal practice can benefit others. I consider myself a lifelong NVC learner and explorer.

Drop ins to either class are welcome. \nTwo Tuesdays March 14th and March 21st\n6:30pm-8:30pm\nCost: Donation Based \nAt Diamond Light Meditation Center\n2791 24th Street\, Room 14 (upstairs)\nSacramento\, CA 95818\nparking lot in back \nFor more information: https://www.diamondlightsac.org \nAbout Sunil: I started studying Nonviolent Communication (NVC) with Itara O’Connell in 2004. After attending NVC practice groups with Itara for a few years\, I attended the year-long NVC Leadership Program in 2008 with Bay NVC in Oakland. NVC continues to have a transformational effect on my professional and personal life\, along with other practices like movement\, meditation\, etc. It has deepened the quality of relationships in my life\, with myself and others. After all these years of exploring this work\, I am still amazed at the power and simplicity this approach offers for meeting challenging experiences and interactions in a skillful way. While I am not a certified NVC trainer\, I feel happy when I can contribute to other’s wellbeing by sharing the fruits of my personal practice. I consider myself a lifelong NVC learner and explorer.

SUMMARY:Are There Past and Future Lives?
DESCRIPTION:Accepting that all beings have past and future lives is a foundational practice of Buddhism. It is the basis for understanding that our actions in the past caused our present\, and our current actions create our future. During this 10 week course\, join Heather while we dive into the logic behind the Buddhist concept of rebirth. Each class will consist of prayers\, meditation\, dharma teaching and discussion. \nThis course is perfect for students who are searching for an in depth and logical explanation into the idea of rebirth and a better understanding of how the world works. Students will leave having explored what happens after we die and cultivating logic\, an invaluable tool that can reveal the truth in any situation. This course is taught from a Buddhist perspective\, but everyone is welcome regardless of beliefs or current understanding. \n10 Wednesdays January 4-March 8\, 2017\n6:30-8:30pm\nDonations Welcome \nAt Diamond Light Meditation Center\n2741 24th Street\, Room 14 (upstairs)\nSacramento CA 95818 \nHeather started practicing yoga in 2001 and finished her teacher training in 2008. Yoga is what led her to Buddhism\, with her first class taught by Lama Marut in 2008. She has studied with many amazing teachers over the years\, her closest teacher being Amie Diller. Heather’s passion is the Tibetan Gelugpa tradition\, in the lineage of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. She recently finished a six year\, eighteen course intensive and is excited to share these classes with others. \nHeather grew up in Northern California and received her Bachelor of the Arts in Communication at San Diego State University. She also has an Associate of the Arts degree in Visual Communication from the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising.

SUMMARY:Cultivating Meaning\, Empathy and Emotional Awareness
DESCRIPTION:Cultivating Meaning\, Empathy and Emotional Awareness\n5 Tuesdays Feb 7 – March 7 6:30-8:30pm\nWe wouldn’t want a life without the pull of our emotions—whether we are experiencing love and joy or grief and sadness\, our emotions help us navigate our lives\, discern what we need\, and relate to others. Yet\, overwhelming emotions can leave us feeling triggered\, drained\, and unable to engage in the fullness of life. When the pull of our emotions becomes too strong\, we get caught in reactivity when what we truly long for is safety and connection. \nBut we can use our emotional life as a tool for transformation. As we gain a richer understanding of the inner-workings of emotion\, and come to understand how to drop in to our own experiences with awareness and ease\, we create space between stimulus and reaction—expanding our capacity to be with our suffering\, connect with others\, and show up for life. \nIn this experiential training you will learn about contemplative and western scientific approaches to understanding emotions. You will be guided through meditation training in non-distraction and an embodied experience of our emotions. Each gathering will include presentation\, small group dialogue\, guided meditation and personal reflection. Join us\, bring your emotions. \n5 Tuesdays Feb 7 – March 7\n6:30-8:30pm\n1 Saturday\, March 4\n10:00am-1:00pm \nAt Diamond Light Meditation Center\n2791 24th Street\, Room 14 (upstairs)\nSacramento CA 95818 \nAt age 19 Amie Diller stumbled on Tassajara Zen Mountain Center\, dropped out of college\, and embarked on a life-long passion for the study and practice of Buddhism. For the last 15 years Amie has been practicing & teaching internationally in the Tibetan Gelupa Buddhist tradition. Being a certified nurse-midwife and mother have also brought great joy\, along with fertile ground for practicing in the world with a wise and compassionate heart. \nBrandy Davis is a meditation and yoga teacher. She has been studying and practicing for over two decades. Her current passion is restorative justice and working with incarcerated populations. She has a particular knack for personalizing deep philosophical concepts and making them applicable to our modern lives. She teaches with love and humor. Brandy’s greatest joy comes from witnessing the opening of the human heart. \nThe Cultivating Emotional Balance training began during a meeting between behavioral scientists\, a neuroscientist\, a monk\, a philosopher\, and the Dalai Lama in 2000\, as a new approach to understanding our emotional lives. Combining contemporary scientific research with the practices of mindfulness & opening the heart (loving-kindness\, compassion\, joy\, and equanimity)\, this class series offers new tools for working with emotion. \nhttp://bigthink.com/videos/mindfulness-how-to-call-off-the-emotional-attack-dogs-2
