SUMMARY:Got Empathy? Communicating from the Heart
DESCRIPTION:Empathy dispells separation and other-ness by connecting us to our shared humanity. The ability to “feel with” another is an important precursor for compassion. Join Sunil Joseph as we explore the use of Nonviolent Communication (NVC) to cultivate empathy in our relationships – with self and other. No prior knowledge of NVC is necessary and all are welcome! Drop ins to either class are welcome. \nTwo Tuesdays March 14th and March 21st\n6:30pm-8:30pm\nCost: Donation Based \nAt Diamond Light Meditation Center\n2791 24th Street\, Room 14 (upstairs)\nSacramento\, CA 95818\nparking lot in back \nFor more information: https://www.diamondlightsac.org \nAbout Sunil: I started studying Nonviolent Communication (NVC) with Itara O’Connell in 2004. After attending NVC practice groups with Itara for a few years\, I attended the year-long NVC Leadership Program in 2008 with Bay NVC in Oakland. NVC continues to have a transformational effect on my professional and personal life\, along with other practices like movement\, meditation\, etc. It has deepened the quality of relationships in my life\, with myself and others. After all these years of exploring this work\, I am still amazed at the power and simplicity this approach offers for meeting challenging experiences and interactions in a skillful way. While I am not a certified NVC trainer\, I feel happy when I can contribute to other’s wellbeing by sharing the fruits of my personal practice. I consider myself a lifelong NVC learner and explorer.

SUMMARY:Are There Past and Future Lives?
DESCRIPTION:Accepting that all beings have past and future lives is a foundational practice of Buddhism. It is the basis for understanding that our actions in the past caused our present\, and our current actions create our future. During this 10 week course\, join Heather while we dive into the logic behind the Buddhist concept of rebirth. Each class will consist of prayers\, meditation\, dharma teaching and discussion. \nThis course is perfect for students who are searching for an in depth and logical explanation into the idea of rebirth and a better understanding of how the world works. Students will leave having explored what happens after we die and cultivating logic\, an invaluable tool that can reveal the truth in any situation. This course is taught from a Buddhist perspective\, but everyone is welcome regardless of beliefs or current understanding. \n10 Wednesdays January 4-March 8\, 2017\n6:30-8:30pm\nDonations Welcome \nAt Diamond Light Meditation Center\n2741 24th Street\, Room 14 (upstairs)\nSacramento CA 95818 \nHeather started practicing yoga in 2001 and finished her teacher training in 2008. Yoga is what led her to Buddhism\, with her first class taught by Lama Marut in 2008. She has studied with many amazing teachers over the years\, her closest teacher being Amie Diller. Heather’s passion is the Tibetan Gelugpa tradition\, in the lineage of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. She recently finished a six year\, eighteen course intensive and is excited to share these classes with others. \nHeather grew up in Northern California and received her Bachelor of the Arts in Communication at San Diego State University. She also has an Associate of the Arts degree in Visual Communication from the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising.

SUMMARY:Cultivating Meaning\, Empathy and Emotional Awareness
DESCRIPTION:Cultivating Meaning\, Empathy and Emotional Awareness\n5 Tuesdays Feb 7 – March 7 6:30-8:30pm\nWe wouldn’t want a life without the pull of our emotions—whether we are experiencing love and joy or grief and sadness\, our emotions help us navigate our lives\, discern what we need\, and relate to others. Yet\, overwhelming emotions can leave us feeling triggered\, drained\, and unable to engage in the fullness of life. When the pull of our emotions becomes too strong\, we get caught in reactivity when what we truly long for is safety and connection. \nBut we can use our emotional life as a tool for transformation. As we gain a richer understanding of the inner-workings of emotion\, and come to understand how to drop in to our own experiences with awareness and ease\, we create space between stimulus and reaction—expanding our capacity to be with our suffering\, connect with others\, and show up for life. \nIn this experiential training you will learn about contemplative and western scientific approaches to understanding emotions. You will be guided through meditation training in non-distraction and an embodied experience of our emotions. Each gathering will include presentation\, small group dialogue\, guided meditation and personal reflection. Join us\, bring your emotions. \n5 Tuesdays Feb 7 – March 7\n6:30-8:30pm\n1 Saturday\, March 4\n10:00am-1:00pm \nAt Diamond Light Meditation Center\n2791 24th Street\, Room 14 (upstairs)\nSacramento CA 95818 \nAt age 19 Amie Diller stumbled on Tassajara Zen Mountain Center\, dropped out of college\, and embarked on a life-long passion for the study and practice of Buddhism. For the last 15 years Amie has been practicing & teaching internationally in the Tibetan Gelupa Buddhist tradition. Being a certified nurse-midwife and mother have also brought great joy\, along with fertile ground for practicing in the world with a wise and compassionate heart. \nBrandy Davis is a meditation and yoga teacher. She has been studying and practicing for over two decades. Her current passion is restorative justice and working with incarcerated populations. She has a particular knack for personalizing deep philosophical concepts and making them applicable to our modern lives. She teaches with love and humor. Brandy’s greatest joy comes from witnessing the opening of the human heart. \nThe Cultivating Emotional Balance training began during a meeting between behavioral scientists\, a neuroscientist\, a monk\, a philosopher\, and the Dalai Lama in 2000\, as a new approach to understanding our emotional lives. Combining contemporary scientific research with the practices of mindfulness & opening the heart (loving-kindness\, compassion\, joy\, and equanimity)\, this class series offers new tools for working with emotion. \nhttp://bigthink.com/videos/mindfulness-how-to-call-off-the-emotional-attack-dogs-2

SUMMARY:Creating a Bright Future
DESCRIPTION:Create a strong intention and vision for your New Year. You will leave with a written statement\, bullet points\, or a paragraph\, of your personal vision and intention for the New Year. You will learn how to incorporate this vision into a meditation practice that can be used to reset your intentions and aspirations throughout the year. \nDuring the first night you will learn the 4-Fold Vision Quest to create a full and hopeful vision of your new year\, and beyond. There will be time to journal and then meditate/envision this image and story of how the New Year will unfold. Everything from our highest aspirations to our worldly goals will be included in this vision. \nDuring the second night you will take this new vision and apply it to the practices of the 4-Immeasurables (loving kindness\, compassion\, feeling joy for others\, and equanimity). You will learn how to extract the meaning and essence of the 4 Immeasurables and apply them to what is most important and relevant in your life. This is a method of personalizing the 4 Immeasurables so that this practice will stay fresh and relevant for years to come. \nBeginners and experienced students are welcome.

SUMMARY:Letting Go of Fear and Judgement in a World Gone Mad
DESCRIPTION:Our culture is experiencing a breakdown of civility because of heightened fear. Dualistic\, in-group/out-group thinking is tearing our society apart. We are faced with necessary but difficult conversations about racism and sexism. In order to navigate this cultural moment\, we need people who are spiritually evolved and able to keep their hearts open and supple in the midst of fear and violence. This class will look at spiritual practices that can help us live in love with the world\, regardless of the craziness and cruelty around us. \nYou will leave with a better understanding of how fear and judgement function in our lives and be empowered to live with less fear and more open to everyone\, particularly those who we see as different from ourselves\, or even threatening. \nTuesdays 6:30p-8:30p\nNov 29\, Dec 6\, Dec 13\nDonations Welcomed \nThis class is appropriate for all levels. \nBrian Baker is an Episcopal Priest and the Dean of Trinity Cathedral in Sacramento. He began meditating long before he ever entered a church. He has a long history of teaching with Tibetan Buddhists. In 2005 he organized and facilitated a conversation between the Dalai Lama and religious leaders in Idaho. He is a popular speaker at wellness and yoga festivals.

SUMMARY:Practicing the Preliminaries -- with Elaine Jackson
DESCRIPTION:Want to try something other than single-pointed or breath meditation? Want to meditate\, but not sure what to meditate on? A sahdna (daily meditation practice) can be more than watching the breath or growing concentration through one-pointed awareness. It is The Preliminaries that prepare the mind to have success in our meditation practice and realize the deepest truth of reality. \nThis practice is like the tillers that aerate and nutrients we add to the soil that prepare the ground to bear fruit. Understanding how The Preliminaries soften and open our heart and experiencing the joy that is generated when we practice them can only arise if we engage in them. \nElaine Jackson returns to Sacramento for one night to discuss these preliminaries and then practice them through Lama Tsong Khapa’s Guru Yoga. This practice consists of chanting\, prayer and meditation. Sometimes it is intimidating to do this practice on your own\, but with guidance and instruction\, you can feel empowered to do them at home. The class is designed to deepen your current meditation practice or help you establish a Guru Yoga practice! \n Elaine Jackson is a founding member of Vajrapani Institute and has been a student of Tibetan Buddhism since 1977\, studying with many of the greatest Buddhist teachers of our time. Every year for 12 years she engaged in a month-long solitary meditation retreat to deepen her practice. \nShe served as Executive Director of Vajrapani Institute for over five years just prior to entering a three-year meditation retreat completed in April\, 2014. She lives a contemplative life off-the-grid in the Santa Cruz mountains while offering Dharma teachings and meditation support.

SUMMARY:The Need for a Spiritual Teacher: Why can't I just read a book?

This workshop follows Tibetan Buddhist explanations of spiritual teacher/student relationships\, but can apply to many traditions. \nTuesdays 10/4-10/15 6:30pm-8:30pm\nSaturday 11/19 10am-4pm \nAt Diamond Light Meditation Center\n2791 24th Street\, Room 14 (upstairs)\nSacramento\, CA 95818 \nhttps://www.diamondlightsac.org\nDonations welcome \nHaving an long-held interest in the mind’s capacity for transformation\, Ven. SUMMARY:Compassionate Communication: Wisdom Words to Convey Heart
DESCRIPTION:This class will be an introduction to the principles and core assumptions of Non-Violent Communication. Based upon the concept that much of our emotional and mental turmoil arises when our needs are not met by ourselves\, family & friends\, or our culture. We will begin to understand these needs\, the difference between needs and strategies\, and gain an experiential taste of the practice of connecting with each other’s needs and the possibility of shifting from judgement to connection. \nWho is this class for?\nAll levels. Anyone who has an interest in better connection with themselves and others. Also relevant for those interested in skillful ways to meet difficult internal and external experiences. \nAbout the teacher\, Sunil Joseph:\nI started studying Nonviolent Communication (NVC) with Itara O’Connell in 2004.
