SUMMARY:Letting Go of Fear and Judgement in a World Gone Mad
DESCRIPTION:Our culture is experiencing a breakdown of civility because of heightened fear. Dualistic\, in-group/out-group thinking is tearing our society apart. We are faced with necessary but difficult conversations about racism and sexism. In order to navigate this cultural moment\, we need people who are spiritually evolved and able to keep their hearts open and supple in the midst of fear and violence. This class will look at spiritual practices that can help us live in love with the world\, regardless of the craziness and cruelty around us. \nYou will leave with a better understanding of how fear and judgement function in our lives and be empowered to live with less fear and more open to everyone\, particularly those who we see as different from ourselves\, or even threatening. \nTuesdays 6:30p-8:30p\nNov 29\, Dec 6\, Dec 13\nDonations Welcomed \nThis class is appropriate for all levels. \nBrian Baker is an Episcopal Priest and the Dean of Trinity Cathedral in Sacramento. He began meditating long before he ever entered a church. He has a long history of teaching with Tibetan Buddhists. In 2005 he organized and facilitated a conversation between the Dalai Lama and religious leaders in Idaho. He is a popular speaker at wellness and yoga festivals.

SUMMARY:Practicing the Preliminaries -- with Elaine Jackson
DESCRIPTION:Want to try something other than single-pointed or breath meditation? Want to meditate\, but not sure what to meditate on? A sahdna (daily meditation practice) can be more than watching the breath or growing concentration through one-pointed awareness. It is The Preliminaries that prepare the mind to have success in our meditation practice and realize the deepest truth of reality. \nThis practice is like the tillers that aerate and nutrients we add to the soil that prepare the ground to bear fruit. Understanding how The Preliminaries soften and open our heart and experiencing the joy that is generated when we practice them can only arise if we engage in them. \nElaine Jackson returns to Sacramento for one night to discuss these preliminaries and then practice them through Lama Tsong Khapa’s Guru Yoga. This practice consists of chanting\, prayer and meditation. Sometimes it is intimidating to do this practice on your own\, but with guidance and instruction\, you can feel empowered to do them at home. The class is designed to deepen your current meditation practice or help you establish a Guru Yoga practice! \n Elaine Jackson is a founding member of Vajrapani Institute and has been a student of Tibetan Buddhism since 1977\, studying with many of the greatest Buddhist teachers of our time. Every year for 12 years she engaged in a month-long solitary meditation retreat to deepen her practice. \nShe served as Executive Director of Vajrapani Institute for over five years just prior to entering a three-year meditation retreat completed in April\, 2014. She lives a contemplative life off-the-grid in the Santa Cruz mountains while offering Dharma teachings and meditation support.

SUMMARY:The Need for a Spiritual Teacher: Why can't I just read a book?
DESCRIPTION:The Spiritual Teacher: Why Can’t I Just Read a Book?\nwith Venerable Gyalten Palmo \nFollowing a spiritual path can be deeply fulfilling\, personal\, and at times challenging. This workshop follows Tibetan Buddhist explanations of spiritual teacher/student relationships\, but can apply to many traditions. \nTuesdays 10/4-10/15 6:30pm-8:30pm\nSaturday 11/19 10am-4pm \nAt Diamond Light Meditation Center\n2791 24th Street\, Room 14 (upstairs)\nSacramento\, CA 95818 \nhttps://www.diamondlightsac.org\nDonations welcome \nHaving an long-held interest in the mind’s capacity for transformation\, Ven. SUMMARY:Compassionate Communication: Wisdom Words to Convey Heart
DESCRIPTION:This class will be an introduction to the principles and core assumptions of Non-Violent Communication. Based upon the concept that much of our emotional and mental turmoil arises when our needs are not met by ourselves\, family & friends\, or our culture. We will begin to understand these needs\, the difference between needs and strategies\, and gain an experiential taste of the practice of connecting with each other’s needs and the possibility of shifting from judgement to connection. \nWho is this class for?\nAll levels. Anyone who has an interest in better connection with themselves and others. Also relevant for those interested in skillful ways to meet difficult internal and external experiences. \nAbout the teacher\, Sunil Joseph:\nI started studying Nonviolent Communication (NVC) with Itara O’Connell in 2004. After attending NVC practice groups with Itara for a few years\, I attended the year-long NVC Leadership Program in 2008 with Bay NVC in Oakland. NVC continues to have a transformational effect on my professional and personal life\, along with other practices like movement\, meditation\, etc. It has deepened the quality of relationships in my life\, with myself and others. After all these years of exploring this work\, I am still amazed at the power and simplicity this approach offers for meeting challenging experiences and interactions in a skillful way. While I am not a certified NVC trainer\, I feel happy when I can contribute to other’s wellbeing by sharing the fruits of my personal practice. I consider myself a lifelong NVC learner and explorer.

SUMMARY:Meditation: Why and How
DESCRIPTION:Meditation is very practical. It is the cultivation of deep sanity through the art of relaxation\, stillness\, and vigilance leading to deeper and deeper states of inner knowledge. It affords us the opportunity to take an intimate look at our mind – up close and personal. What is it? How does it function? Where do thoughts come from? Are thoughts “real”? How do they change? How do they create our world? \nBy learning to meditate\, we begin to cultivate the awareness necessary to make wise choices\, to create a happy future by thinking and acting wisely. Join Elaine Jackson for this workshop where we will discuss some effective methods for beginning a meditation practice and for overcoming difficulties in an already existing practice – how to persevere when the going gets rough. \nThis class is for anyone who has an interest in meditation\, whether they already have an established practice or are brand new. By maintaining an attitude of childlike wonder\, we can always learn something new. When we practice together we learn from each other. \nThursday 9/29 6:30-8:00pm \nAt Diamond Light Meditation Center\n2791 24th Street\, Room 14 (upstairs)\nSacramento\, CA 95818 \nhttps://www.diamondlightsac.org\nDonations welcome \nElaine Jackson is a founding member of Vajrapani Institute and has been a student of Tibetan Buddhism since 1977\, studying with many of the greatest Buddhist teachers of our time. SUMMARY:Green Tara Mandala Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Mandala means “that which extracts the essence.” There are many different types of mandalas utilized in Tibetan Buddhism. The mandala represents the architectural layout of the entire palace of a specific deity. The Menla mandala\, for example\, represents the dwelling of the Medicine Buddha\, who embodies the perfection of the physical and mental health of all beings. There are mufti-layered symbolic images throughout the “palace\,” where iconography\, placement\, and color all have significance. Mandalas can be created in either two or three dimensions. In this workshop Geshe Tsultrim will instruct on the drawing and painting of a two-dimensional mandala. \nDuring the first day\, Geshela will demonstrate the mathematical technique of drafting a Mandala and assist students in mapping and drafting of a simple mandala. On the second day\, if we have time Geshela will then review everyone’s draft\, offer a discussion on the use of color and demonstrate various techniques for the actual painting of the mandala. Everyone will have the opportunity to work directly with Geshela. Mandala paintings can take as many as 100 hours to complete. In view of this – this workshop is intended as an overview. Participants will not complete there Mandala during the workshop but will be supplied with information to support completion on their own time. \nWorkshop Registration:\n2-Day Mandala Workshop\nSaturday and Sunday 8/20-8/21 10:00am-4pm (with break for lunch)\n$95 for both days (preregistration required)\nat Diamond Light Meditation Center\n2791 24th Street\, Room 14 (upstairs)\nSacramento CA 95818 \nWhat to bring:\nCompass\n18” metal ruler (if you have one)\nGood drafting pencil and erasers\nAny mechanical drafting tools that may be helpful for measurement.

SUMMARY:Refuge and the Three Jewels
DESCRIPTION:  \nThe three jewels are the Buddha\, Dharma\, and Sangha. It is by making these the central principles of your life that you become a Buddhist. Join Geshe Tsultrim Tuesday nights 8/2\, 8/9 and 8/16 from 6:30-8:30pm to learn how to take refuge in the Three Jewels. During these classes there will be short mediations and Dharma talks delving into each of the Three Jewels\, and what it means to go for refuge. \nThe Buddha jewel refers both to the historical Buddha and to the ideal of Buddhahood itself. Going for refuge to the Buddha jewel means seeing him as your ultimate teacher and spiritual example and committing yourself to ending the suffering of yourself and all beings. \nThe Dharma jewel means the teachings of the Buddha\, or the truth he understood. The central teachings emphasize the development of mindfulness and kindness\, examining our actions in the light of our ethical values\, and seeing how our thoughts condition our lives. Regarding the Dharma as a refuge means seeing these teachings as the best guide to reality\, and committing yourself to practicing them. \nThe third of the Three Jewels is the Sangha or the spiritual community\, and the people with whom we share our spiritual lives. We need the guidance of personal teachers\, who are further along the path than we are\, and the support and friendship of other practitioners. \nThree Tuesday Nights: August 2\, 9\, 16 from 6:30-8:30pm \nAt Diamond Light Meditation Center\, Sierra 2 Center\n2791 24th St\, room 14 (upstairs)\nSacramento CA 95818 \nNo experience required\, come as you are able\,drop ins encouraged!
