SUMMARY:Lam Rim: A Daylong Mediatation
DESCRIPTION:Lam Rim\nA Day Long Guided Meditation \nBuddhist Masters throughout the ages have advised that our experience of the world and actually our world itself\, come from our mind. Yet\, rarely do we gift ourselves the quality time to explore what shapes our life. In this day long practice\, we will engage in guided meditations that probe into how our reality exists: what is our current condition and how can we use it to best advantage to create a happier future for ourselves and all beings. \nDuring this day long workshop\, we will spend the day:\n– Receiving practical meditation advice from Buddhist Masters of the past\n– Exploring how our mind shapes our reality\n– Participating in guided meditations to probe how our reality exists\n– Discussing how to create a happier future for ourselves and others\n– Examining practical techniques useful for daily life\n– Practicing meditation in a supportive community to prepare for the real world \nWhen: October 1\, 2016 • 10:00AM – 4:00PM\nLunch Break: 12:30 – 1:30PM\nWhere: Diamond Light Meditation Center\, 2741 24th Street\, Room 14 (upstairs) Sacramento\nCost: Free event\, Donations welcome \nElaine Jackson is a founding member of Vajrapani Institute and has been a student of Tibetan Buddhism since 1977\, studying with many of the greatest Buddhist teachers of our time. Every year for 12 years she engaged in a month-long solitary meditation retreat to deepen her practice. \nShe served as Executive Director of Vajrapani Institute for over five years just prior to entering a three-year meditation retreat completed in April\, 2014. She lives a contemplative life off-the-grid in the Santa Cruz mountains while offering Dharma teachings and meditation support.

SUMMARY:Compassionate Communication: Wisdom Words to Convey Heart
DESCRIPTION:This class will be an introduction to the principles and core assumptions of Non-Violent Communication. Based upon the concept that much of our emotional and mental turmoil arises when our needs are not met by ourselves\, family & friends\, or our culture. We will begin to understand these needs\, the difference between needs and strategies\, and gain an experiential taste of the practice of connecting with each other’s needs and the possibility of shifting from judgement to connection. \nWho is this class for?\nAll levels. Anyone who has an interest in better connection with themselves and others. Also relevant for those interested in skillful ways to meet difficult internal and external experiences. \nAbout the teacher\, Sunil Joseph:\nI started studying Nonviolent Communication (NVC) with Itara O’Connell in 2004. After attending NVC practice groups with Itara for a few years\, I attended the year-long NVC Leadership Program in 2008 with Bay NVC in Oakland. NVC continues to have a transformational effect on my professional and personal life\, along with other practices like movement\, meditation\, etc. It has deepened the quality of relationships in my life\, with myself and others. After all these years of exploring this work\, I am still amazed at the power and simplicity this approach offers for meeting challenging experiences and interactions in a skillful way. While I am not a certified NVC trainer\, I feel happy when I can contribute to other’s wellbeing by sharing the fruits of my personal practice. I consider myself a lifelong NVC learner and explorer.
