SUMMARY:Breakfast for the Homeless
DESCRIPTION:Each month\, through YOUR generosity we are able to offer a hot\, hearty\, nutritious breakfast to a portion of the population living among us that might otherwise go hungry. Our breakfast includes hot coffee and oatmeal with fixings\, two hard-boiled eggs\, and two or three pieces of fresh fruit. Each month we depend on YOU to provide the eggs and fruit and to help serve breakfast\, often to as many as 275 people\, at Friendship Park.  \nWhen: The second Monday and third Friday of each month! Food service happens at 7am\, donations need to be dropped off the day before.\nWhat: cash and food donations or help serve breakfast!\nWhere: drop off food donations in midtown\, breakfast is served at Friendship Park in downtown! \nTo help\, please sign up: https://tinyurl.com/DL-BreakfastProgram  \nYou can also email us at breakfastprogramsac@gmail.com to get added to the list serve \nNot near or unavailable to help out in person??? SUMMARY:Refining our Vitality: Tao\, Buddha\, and Emotional Balance
DESCRIPTION:Refining our Vitality: The Tao\, The Buddha\, and Emotional Balance \nLasting and meaningful wellbeing is a common goal uniting the traditions of the Buddha and the Tao. While ultimately having different paths in achieving this goal\, both traditions emphasize the  cultivation of wholesome states and the development of insight through meditation. Taoist meditaiton in particular  places special emphasis on of our vital energy\, chi- taking vitality as the main vehicle of the path. \nJoin Visiting Teacher Anand Parikshak for a special month of teachings on the Taoist neidan tradition focused on the cultivation of well-being and emotional balance. Weekly classes will focus on Taoist internal cultivation practices while bringing in perspectives from Buddhism and emotional psychology. As an Indian-American\, Anand was first taught meditation and posture from his father- the son of a yogi and Vedic educator. During his teens\, Anand took a personal interest in meditation inspired by a connection to Nature and his main mentor\, Dr. B Bayard\, a Taoist practitioner and physician.  Under Dr. Bayard’s training and the training of other great teachers\, Anand has studied meditation\, qigong\, and Tai Chi Chuan. With respect to the teachings given to him\, Anand now leads and developments meditation and mindfulness based programs for individuals from all walks of life. He has been honored to teach all around the world including  prestigious institutions such as UCSF’s Osher Center\, American University’s School of International Service\, and the United States Department of State.

SUMMARY:Perfect Generosity: Becoming a Bodhisattva with Heather Breault
DESCRIPTION:Suffering is all around us\, and it can be overwhelming to know what to do or how to help. Master Shantideva wrote a detailed guide on how to live as a Bodhisattva\, or spiritual warrior who works to reach enlightenment for the benefit of all beings. This guide teaches us how to reduce others’ suffering though generosity\, ethics\, patience and wisdom.  \nTopics include: the benefits of being a bodhisattva\, the preliminaries you must undertake to become a bodhisattva\, how to remove existing obstacles which prevent realization of true bodhichitta\, how to collect the causes to develop true bodhichitta\, the recollection and watchfulness required to think and act like a bodhisattva\, The Guide as a description of the six perfections\, the order in which to undertake practice of the six perfections\, how to treat your mental afflictions\, and an explanation of the perfection of giving and the perfection of an ethical way of life.  \nThis class is for students who have taken introductory Buddhist classes. This course is open for the first three weeks\, afterwards please wait for the next course to begin attending. \nEach class will have a dharma teachings\, discussion and meditations. Heather’s passion is the Tibetan Gelugpa tradition\, in the lineage of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. She recently finished a six year\, eighteen course intensive and is excited to share these classes with others.  \nHeather grew up in Northern California and received her Bachelor of the Arts in Communication at San Diego State University. She also has an Associate of the Arts degree in Visual Communication from the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising.

She draws on advanced training and life experiences in clinical social work\, integrative medicine research\, and contemplative meditation practices and science.\nShe is the Director of Training at the University of California Berkeley Greater Good Science Center. Ekman’s research interests were inspired by her experience as a medical social worker in the emergency department of San Francisco General Hospital coupled with her training in the applied emotion regulation and mindfulness intervention: Cultivating Emotional Balance\, CEB.
