SUMMARY:Introduction to Compassionate Communication with Sunil Joseph
DESCRIPTION:How do we stay connected to the innate goodness of our basic human nature in the midst of challenging times? How can I make the world a kinder place by changing how I communicate? In this class\, we will introduce the principles and practices of Nonviolent Communication (NVC) to cultivate empathy and compassion. No prior knowledge of NVC is necessary. All are welcome. \nWe will introduce the fundamentals of NVC – Observations\, Feelings\, Needs\, and Requests. We will introduce core NVC distinctions that lead to our freedom:\n– observations vs judgement\n– feelings vs thinking\n– needs vs strategies\n– requests vs demands \nWe will bring non-judgmental awareness to our current communication strategies. We will use NVC tools to shift our attention from right-wrong/reward-punishment thinking to a human needs-centric view. We will introduce practices for cultivating greater felt awareness of our inner world and also learn how to compassionately listen and receive others. We will explore ways to respectfully ask for what we want while also including the other person’s needs. \nTo quote the Dalai Lama – “If you want others to be happy\, practice compassion. If you want to be happy\, practice compassion.” \nAt Diamond Light Meditation Center\n2791 24th Street\, Room 14 (upstairs)\nSacramento CA 95818\nparking lot in back\, ADA accessible \nCost: $20-$60\, no one turned away for lack of funds \nThis event is a fundraiser for the Diamond Light Homeless Breakfast fund which offers a monthly breakfast to anyone who needs it. For more about this amazing group of local volunteers: https://www.facebook.com/events/631610420518953/ \nTo register: email diamondlight.sac@gmail.com\npay at the door\, or to pay online: http://www.diamondlightsac.org/donate/\nscholarships available! email for more info \nAbout the instructor: Sunil Joseph has been a student of NVC since 2004. He attended BayNVC’s Leadership program in 2008 where he learned to share NVC with others. Sunil is passionate about sharing his appreciation for NVC with others.

SUMMARY:Escaping Uncertainty\, a Study of Buddhist Ethics with Heather Breault
DESCRIPTION:The Buddha taught that to reduce suffering and live a happy life\, you must watch your actions and live a life of virtue. Luckily\, he laid out a code of ethics to follow that would do just that. \nIn a world where morality seems to be declining\, in this course will learn the reasons to choose an ethical life. How this leads to deeper happiness and fulfillment\, and ultimately freedom from suffering. \nThe Ethical Life covers the Buddhist code of ethics and the relationship between an ethical way of life\, meditating deeply\, and experiencing ultimate reality. \nTopics include: the three trainings; one day vows; the five lifetime lay vows; the individual freedom vows; an outline of novice\, intermediate\, and fully ordained monastic vows; the essence of vows; the basic nature of vows; reasons to live an ethical life; reasons to take vows; why morality is the key to meditation and seeing emptiness directly; how to keep vows from being damaged; how vows are lost; the specific karma resulting from each of the ten non-virtues; how to find a teacher; the characteristics of a qualified teacher; taking refuge; the four forces of karmic purification; the four truths; and the six perfections. \nThis class is for students who have taken introductory Buddhist classes. This course is open for the first three weeks\, afterwards please wait for the next course to begin attending. \nEach class will have a dharma teachings\, discussion and meditations. There are optional readings\, homework and quizzes for deeper study and understanding. \n10 Wednesdays September 5-November 7\, 6:30pm-8:30pm\nat Diamond Light Meditation Center\n2791 24th Street\, Room 14 (upstairs)\, Sacramento CA 95818\nparking lot in back\, ADA accessible \ncost: suggested donation $10-$20 per class\, no one turned away for lack of funds \nwww.diamondlightsac.org \n \nHeather started practicing yoga in 2001 and finished her teacher training in 2008. Yoga is what led her to Buddhism\, with her first class taught by Lama Marut in 2008. She has studied with many amazing teachers over the years\, her closest teacher being Amie Diller. Heather’s passion is the Tibetan Gelugpa tradition\, in the lineage of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. She recently finished a six year\, eighteen course intensive and is excited to share these classes with others. \nHeather grew up in Northern California and received her Bachelor of the Arts in Communication at San Diego State University. SUMMARY:Our Shared Humanity - with Sunil Joseph
DESCRIPTION:In response to the busyness of our lives\, we operate in doing-mode which is often disconnected from beingness. When our tasks are done\, it can be difficult to let go of the doing\, relax and drop back into being human again. Our humanity can feel uncomfortable\, vulnerable\, and unpleasant with all its complexity and messiness. When we are disconnected from our own humanity\, it is difficult to connect with the humanity in others. We can end up objectifying ourselves and others. This\, in turn\, can lead to a sense of isolation and even fear. \nIn this class\, we will use experiential practices to slow down and contact our humanity. We will draw on multiple mindfulness and compassion based approaches\, including Marshall Rosenberg’s Compassionate Communication and Kristin Neff’s Self Compassion Break\, to deepen into our heart space. The shared field and presence of the group will support us in entering the world of feeling and sensing in a safe and supported way. Using contact with ourselves as a support\, we will explore the realm of empathy and shared/common humanity. The field of shared humanity has the power to inspire a natural trust and relax our nervous systems. \nThe class will primarily be experiential with just enough theory to support our exploration. All are welcome. No prior experience is necessary. All the teachings are offered for free as our mission is to serve everyone regardless of means. For those who can afford it\, we would appreciate a $10-$20 donation per class. \nSunil Josef: I started studying Nonviolent Communication (NVC) in 2004. NVC has had a transformational effect on my professional and personal life. I am continually amazed at the power and simplicity of this way of living life. While I am not a certified NVC trainer\, I am happy when the fruits of my personal practice can benefit others. I consider myself a lifelong NVC learner and explorer.

SUMMARY:Meditations for Cultivating Stillness and Revealing Insight - with Doug Veenhof
DESCRIPTION:The close observation of individual moments of experience combined with inquiry can reveal experiential insights about the nature of the self\, the mind\, and the world of phenomena that have greater transformational power than conceptual analysis alone. Join Doug Veenhof as we examine how these empirical insights are what actually cut through the subtlest obscurations to Pristine Awareness. \nThis “fusion of shamatha and vipashyana\,” as Tsongkhapa calls it\, is presented within the context of Dzogchen\, Tibetan Buddhism’s Great Perfection. Participants will learn why the still awareness achieved with shamatha practice is essential before experiential wisdom can flourish. \nThis weekend retreat will be organized into one-hour modules that begin with instruction on a progression of meditation techniques designed to produce the effortless stillness and vividness of mind achieved with shamatha practice and then apply that single-pointed focus to an investigation of individual moments of experience. Each one-hour module also includes a guided meditation and a period of silent\, self-guided meditation to integrate the new practice as your own to take home . \nParticipants will learn a full range of shamatha practices\, from breath meditations to Taking the Mind as the Path\, and Awareness of Awareness. These latter practices will feature a new \, very effective approach that Doug learned in his recent two-month retreat with his teacher\, renowned shamatha master Lama Alan Wallace. We then explore the fusion of shamatha and vipashyana with insight practices drawn from the traditions of Dzogchen and Mahamudra. \nThis clear and systematic approach will provide a great foundation for those new to meditation\, and long term practitioners may find that this empirical approach to revealing wisdom is just what they have been missing. \nAt Diamond Light Meditation Center\n2791 24th Street\, Room 14 (upstairs)\nSacramento\, CA 95818\nParking lot in back\, ADA accessible \ncost: $40-$60 one day/$75-$110 one weekend\nScholarships Available (email diamond light.sac@gmail.com)\nTo Register: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/meditation-to-reveal-insight-with-doug-veenhof-tickets-47389636679 \nDoug Veenhof is a former mountain guide\, an award-winning journalist\, author\, and long-time Buddhist practitioner. DESCRIPTION:Tibetan Art Symbols with Geshe Lobsang Tsultrim \nTuesdays 8/21 6:30pm-8:30pm \nJoin us as Geshe Tsultrim\, a highly-skilled artist\, leads us on an exploration of Tibetan Art Symbols. Tibetan Buddhist art is created using Buddhist symbolism to represent certain aspects of the dharma. Buddhist figures and sacred objects tend to be esoteric and symbolic in meaning. Mudras are symbolic hand gestures that describe the action of the figures. Many images function as mandalas. \nBuddhist art often makes use of the “Eight Auspicious Symbols.” These symbols are:\n1.	Lotus flower – representing purity and enlightenment.\n2.	Endless knot\, or\, the mandala – representing eternal harmony.\n3.	Pair of goldenfish – representing conjugal happiness and freedom.\n4.	Victory banner – representing a victorious battle.\n5.	Wheel of the Dharma – representing knowledge.\n6.	Treasure vase – representing inexhaustible treasure and wealth.\n7.	Parasol – representing the crown\, and protection from the elements.\n8.	Conch shell – representing the thoughts of the Buddha. \nat Diamond Light Meditation Center\n2791 24th Street\, Room 14 (upstairs)\nSacramento CA 95818\nparking lot in back\, ADA accessible \nsuggested donation: $10-$20 per class\, no one turned away for lack of funds \nGeshe Lobsang Tsultrim is part of the Gaden Shartse Monastery in south India. “Geshe” is a monastic degree similar to a PhD that is earned after decades of intensive study and passing the highest-level exams. This class will present the Buddhist approach to dealing with disturbing emotions\, as well as introducing the various techniques and practices taught in Buddhist philosophy and meditation practice for working with our emotions. \nBeginners are welcome and encouraged\, as well as older students wanting to learn new techniques for dealing with emotions \nat Diamond Light Meditation Center\n2791 24th Street Room 14\, Sacramento CA 95818 (upstairs)\nparking lot in back\, ADA accessible \nsuggested donation: $10-$20 per class\, no one turned away for lack of funds \nVenerable Tenzin Chogkyi is a Buddhist nun\, activist and popular Buddhist retreat leader and teacher. She loves bridging the worlds of Buddhist thought\, current affairs\, and the latest research in the field of positive psychology. As well as being passionate about her spiritual practice she also cares deeply about prison reform\, animal rights\, equal rights for all and bringing an end to human trafficking and other modern forms of slavery. \nVenerable Tenzin first became interested in meditation after reading Be Here Now and Autobiography of a Yogi in the early 1970s. She describes her spiritual path over the next 20 years as “meandering and haphazard” until she bought a one-way ticket to India in early 1991 with the intention of meeting His Holiness the Dalai Lama. In the end\, she became a student not only of His Holiness\, but also of Kirti Tsenshab Rinpoche and Lama Zopa Rinpoche during the year she spent studying at Tushita Meditation Centre in Dharamsala\, India and Kopan Monastery in Kathmandu\, Nepal.

SUMMARY:Manifesting Compassion
DESCRIPTION:Compassion for Ourselves:\nWhat it is\, what it isn’t\, why it can be difficult\, and how it can make us happy\n4 Thursday evenings in June: 6/7\, 6/14\, 6/21\, 6/28 from 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm \nManifesting Compassion in our Relationships:\nWidening our compassion to others\, and creating a better world\nDaylong retreat on Saturday\, June 16\, from 10:00 am – 4:30 pm \nIn this series of classes (four Thursday evenings plus one daylong) we will explore how to increase our ability to be compassionate with ourselves\, our loved ones\, and people we find challenging to interact with. We will also explore how we can meet the suffering in our world and actively respond to it from a compassionate stance. We will explore how to bring compassion into our social justice activism. We will apply the teachings and practices of Buddhism and Nonviolent Communication (NVC) in this class. \nResearch at Stanford medical school is showing that compassion results in a deep sense of well-being\, it promotes the immune system\, and also results in decreased levels of stress. According to Dr. Doty\, founder of Stanford’s Center for Compassion and Altruism Research and Education\, “Compassion is what is going to save our species”. Buddhism considers compassion one of the two wings of the great bird of awakening along with wisdom. According to the Dalai Lama – “If you want others to be happy\, practice compassion. If you want to be happy\, practice compassion.” Modern research and Buddhism are unified in the belief that we can increase our ability to be compassionate. \nat Diamond Light Meditation Center\n2791 24th Street Room 14 (upstairs)\nSacramento\, CA 95818\nparking lot in back\, ADA accessible \nNote: No prior knowledge or experience with Buddhism of NVC is required to participate. All are welcome. It is not necessary to participate in both the Thursday night series and the daylong\, but is recommended in order to experience the full scope of our compassion. \nVenerable Tenzin Chogkyi: Venerable Tenzin Chogkyi is a Buddhist nun\, activist and popular Buddhist retreat leader and teacher. NVC has had a transformational effect on my professional and personal life. I am continually amazed at the power and simplicity of this way of living life. While I am not a certified NVC trainer\, I am happy when the fruits of my personal practice can benefit others. I consider myself a lifelong NVC learner and explorer.

SUMMARY:Listening as a Spiritual Practice
DESCRIPTION:True listening is the capacity of our hearts to receive and hold another’s truth\, even when it doesn’t agree with our own values and beliefs. Generously offering our attention and presence to another human being is a radical act in a world where many are talking and few are really listening. At times\, we need this capacity internally to receive parts of ourselves that we dislike or feel uncomfortable about. \nListening does not require us to agree with or to like what we’re hearing. We simply aim to create space for another’s reality\, to respect that it exists. At a certain depth\, listening becomes an experience of pure presence. \nIn this class\, we will use the principles and practices of Nonviolent Communication (NVC) to cultivate our listening skills. We will create a supportive learning space that is inclusive of all skill levels. No prior experience with NVC is necessary. All are welcome. \nBy donation: $10 – $20\nNo one turned away for lack of funds. \nAbout Sunil: I started studying Nonviolent Communication (NVC) in 2004. NVC has had a transformational effect on my professional and personal life. I am continually amazed at the power and simplicity of this way of living life. While I am not a certified NVC trainer\, I am happy when the fruits of my personal practice can benefit others. I consider myself a lifelong NVC learner and explorer.
