SUMMARY:Embodying Compassionate Presence: A Chenrezig Retreat with Rob Preece
DESCRIPTION:Embodying Compassionate Presence – A Chenrezig Retreat \n4-Day Online Retreat\nFriday April 14\, 2023-Monday April 17\, 2023\n7am-5pm PDT\nPlease plan to attend all days\, no partial retreat available \nSliding scale $200-$300\nScholarships available\, please email diamondlight.sac@gmail.com to request a scholarship.\nSpace is limited so register now: https://bookwhen.com/diamondlightsac/e/ev-s4yj-20230414000000 \nThis retreat will be open to anyone who has a background in the Tibetan tradition\, no specific empowerment is required to attend. \nThe practice of Chenrezig gives us the opportunity to receive and attune to a deep quality of compassionate presence. As we become increasingly familiar with this in ourselves\, we are then more able to offer this to others as an expression of Bodhichitta. Perhaps the most meaningful way we can be of benefit to another when they are suffering is to offer compassionate presence. This is a quality that can be totally present and open in a way that allows both ourselves and others to be as we are\, free of agendas and expectations. \nWhen we experience this\, it enables our suffering to begin to move through because it is held safely with compassion. We have all needed this at different times in our life. Can we be this for ourselves as well as for others? Chenrezig is the Buddha of compassionate presence. He enables us to begin to discover and embody that quality in a way that can inform all of our relationships including to ourselves. \nDuring this retreat the practice of Chenrezig will be combined with Mahamudra meditation and Kum Nye. \nThis retreat is for those who have some experience of Buddhist meditation. \nRob Preece\nRob has been a practicing Tibetan Buddhist since 1973. In 1980 he went to India and was in retreat for around five years exploring in depth the practice of tantra\, meditating under the guidance of his teachers Lama Thubten Yeshe\, Gen Jhampa Wangdu and Lama Zopa Rinpoche. Returning to the West\, in 1985 he began a Jungian based psychotherapy training\, gradually developing a synthesis of Jungian and Buddhist understanding. He worked as a psychotherapist for around 28 years and then began to focus upon spiritual mentoring. Since 1985 he has been leading meditation retreats\, following the influence of Lama Yeshe who particularly encouraged his integration of a more Western approach to tantric practice. He is an experienced Tangkha painter as well as the author of The Psychology of Buddhist Tantra; The Wisdom of Imperfection; and most recently Tasting the Essence of Tantra. Today he teaches retreats in the UK with his wife Anna and also in Europe and the US. \nInstructions\nLog in info and full schedule will be emailed out before the retreat.\nPlease plan to attend the entire 4-day retreat. As this retreat is online\, please do your best to create a retreat-like atmosphere in your home for the 4 days by minimizing distractions.

SUMMARY:Mindfulness for Dark Times with Sunil Joseph
DESCRIPTION:Tuesdays 6:30 pm- 8:30 pm\nDecember 6\, December 13\, December 20\, December 27 \nClick on the Zoom link to join: https://us04web.zoom.us/j/2247358115 \nThe beginning of winter can be challenging with the time change bringing darkness early in the evenings\, the shortening of daylight hours\, colder weather\, and a shift in our rhythms as nature slows down around us. How do we hold our hearts with care as we travel through this winter? How do we find connection and belonging while caving at home? \nEach session will be a combination of body awareness meditations and felt-sense listening practices to slow down and invite the grace/mystery that allows things to be as they are. Body awareness can withdraw energy from our busy\, stimulated minds to help us find the open space of the present moment. \nIn the words of Rachel Naomi Remen – “The most basic and powerful way to connect to another person is to listen. Just listen. Perhaps the most important thing we ever give each other is our attention..A loving silence often has far more power to heal and to connect than the most well-intentioned words.” \nThis event is offered for free. We welcome donations you can make without hardship ($10-$20 ). This will help us cover ongoing rent for our Center\, fees to provide online services\, and supporting our teachers. This retreat offers an opportunity to experience the extraordinary nature of this way of healing and\, combined with the practices of Mahamudra and Kum Nye\, it can begin to enable the liberation and transformation of the energy of emotions\, stress and tension held in the body. \nTraditionally the practice of Vajrasattva is one of the preliminary practices for Tantra. It is regarded as profound foundation of awakening to our innate nature that can become a resource throughout our life. The practice of Mahamudra opens us to the innate\, pristine nature of the the mind and the experience of non-duality.The practice of Kum Nye is valuable in deepening our capacity for meditation and freeing energy that can become stuck within sitting practice.\n\nDuring this retreat we will also begin to explore the practices associated with the cultivation of Tummo or “inner heat” and will be particularly appropriate for those who have worked with Rob before. We will be exploring the healing potential of this practice as it opens up our relationship to the energy body. \nThis retreat is for those who have some experience of meditation within the Buddhist tantric tradition\, it is not considered an introduction for those without experience. Anyone wishing to attend who has not worked with Rob before may be asked to give some clarification of their background of practice. \n \nRob Preece\nRob has been a practicing Tibetan Buddhist since 1973.

SUMMARY:Mahaprajapati: The Woman Who Raised the Buddha with Diane Wilde
DESCRIPTION:Mahaprajapati: The Woman Who Raised the Buddha \nTuesday December 7\, 6:30pm-8:00pm\nThis class will be in-person and online (Diane will be teaching online from home). \nHow to attend: \nIn person: 2791 24th Street Room 14\, Sacramento CA 95814 (upstairs\, parking lot in back)\nBe sure to follow the Diamond Light COVID-Protocols.\nJoin live online with Zoom: https://us04web.zoom.us/j/2247358115\n(Meeting ID: 224 735 8115) \nFor more info: http://www.diamondlightsac.org\nMahaprajapati was the Buddha’s mother (actually his aunt who nurtured and raised him). Oddly\, little was written about her or her influence over her son\, or the establishment of the female sangha — both lay and monastic. Ancient stories about her made their way to China\, Sri Lanka\, Tibet and Thailand but were excluded from the Pali Canon except for one volume\, the Therigatha – “versus of the elder nuns.” Her life experience\, her approach to teaching and her relationship with the women of her sangha was generally ignored by the monks of her time\, and even now. New research and access to ancient “herstory” are now slowly becoming available. What this new information offers is a picture of a compassionate woman\, a gifted leader — who was beloved by her entire community. Mahaprajapati and her community of women had to approach the Dharma with a different sensibility due to the misogyny of that time. Their approach to the Dharma\, which we will discuss\, may be what is needed in today’s world as Buddhism continues to evolve. \nCost: Suggested donation of $10-$20 per class to cover the cost of the class and support the teacher. No one turned away for lack of funds. You can give online: https://www.diamondlightsac.org/donate/ or through our business page on Venmo (@diamondlight) \nAbout the teacher:\n \nDIANE WILDE (Community Teacher and Buddhist Minister)\nDIANE WILDE was born in Verona N.J. In her mid-twenties\, she moved to California where she married\, had two sons\, and was a small business owner for thirty-five years. In 2001 she was a founding member of Sacramento Insight Meditation. In 2003 she began attending yearly Vipassana silent retreats\, and also began annual thirty day silent solo self-retreats at her home. Her eldest son was sentenced to prison on drug related charges just prior to her husband’s death. This event caused her to volunteer in prison as a meditation teacher for over eighteen years. She became a Buddhist prison chaplain and in 2010 founded Buddhist Pathways Prison Project (aka Boundless Freedom Project). She completed a two year mentorship program at Sacramento Insight Meditation in 2006 where she is currently a Community Dharma Teacher. She is a 2008 graduate of Sati Center’s Buddhist Chaplaincy program and in 2012 graduated from Spirit Rock Meditation Center’s Community Dharma Leadership Training Program. In 2015 after two additional years of study\, she was lay-ordained as a Buddhist minister by Gil Fronsdal. Her Pali/ordination name is Reverend Vimuttipala\, meaning “Defender of Freedom.” She is a board member of Sati Center for Buddhist Studies in Redwood City\, as well as the Sacramento Dharma Center.

SUMMARY:Online: How Karma Works
DESCRIPTION:Karma: all of our actions and thoughts have inevitable results\, both positive and negative\, for better or for worse. Navigating our lives—and future rebirths—depends on understanding causality: how karma works. Understanding karma is crucial to reaching our goals\, both material and spiritual. In this six-week course\, we will examine what Buddhism teaches us about how our actions create karma and karmic results by looking at selections from Buddha’s teachings. The class will be live online\, with replays and handouts provided. \nTexts we’ll look at include “Kamma: A Study Guide” by Thanissaro Bhikkhu (an anthology of Gautama Buddha’s lectures)\, “Treasure House of Knowledge” (Sanskrit: “Abhidharmakosha Karika”) by Vasubandhu (circa 350 AD)\, and commentary from “Illumination of the Path to Freedom” written by the First Dalai Lama\, Gyalwa Gendun Drup (1391-1474). \nThe non-doing of what is unskillful\,\nthe performance of what’s skillful\,\nthe cleansing of one’s own mind:\nThis is the Buddhas’ teaching.\n-Dhammapada \nTuesdays June 29–August 10\, 2021\, 6:30pm–8pm Pacific time \nClick on the Zoom link to join: https://us04web.zoom.us/j/2247358115 \nCost: Suggested donation of $10-$20 to cover the cost of the class and support the teacher. SUMMARY:Introduction to Buddhist Meditation with Marc Ross
DESCRIPTION:Introduction to Buddhist Meditation\nTuesdays\, January 19 to February 23\n6:30pm-8:30pm PDT\nThe benefits of meditation are vast. It calms the mind and is the foundation for every spiritual realization. Meditating 5 minutes a day and more can change our brains\, our minds and our view of the world we live in.\nBuddhist meditation is part of a tradition of techniques that go back at least 5\,000 years. Like any other skill\, proper technique makes meditation easier\, more productive and saves you a lot of time. This class is perfect for those who are new to meditating and would like an introduction to the fundamental practices: posture\, types of meditation\, progressive stages of meditation and how to develop a meditation practice. Each class will have teaching\, discussions\, and practice. \nClass materials: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/13UMpXdecyTVanhtJkzfASZARQaG0fP0h?usp=sharing \nMarc Bio:\nI was born in 1955 and raised as a Roman Catholic. For most of my young adult life did not follow a spiritual path. I fell in love with yoga in the early 1990’s and was certified as a yoga instructor in the Iyengar tradition. Through yoga I found Buddhism\, and had a deep attraction to the lineages of Tibetan Buddhism. I have been a practicing Buddhist since that time. My root teacher is Alan Wallace\, who I have had an easy\, natural connection with since meeting him in 2013. I have been blessed with the opportunity to teach meditation both in the US and in Europe.\nProfessionally I have practiced as a chiropractor and body worker for over 40 years\, and am blessed with work that is a spiritual path. \nOnline ; Donation-based\nZoom Meeting ID: 224-735-8115\nhttps://us04web.zoom.us/j/2247358115\nSuggested donation: $10-:$20 to cover expenses\, which include ongoing rent for our Center\, fees to provide online services and supporting our teachers\nNo one turned away due to lack of funds.\nTo donate: www.diamondlightsac.org/donate or search “Diamond Light” on Venmo or Paypal

SUMMARY:Exploring the Path to Awakening: Meditation and the Lam Rim with Amie Diller and Heather Breault
DESCRIPTION:Exploring the Path to Awakening: Meditation and the Lam Rim\nwith Amie Diller and Heather Breault\nTuesdays\, December 29\, 2020 and January 5\, 2020 \nHave you been curious about Buddhist practice\, but don’t know where to begin? Have you attended Buddhist teachings\, but don’t know how to meditate on the subjects you’ve studied? In an age where people look outward for direction and inspiration\, the Buddhist path of Lam Rim Meditations provides time-honored template for looking inward and going deep for the answers we seek.\nThis class will be based on the “Stages of the Path” (lamrim) tradition of Tibetan Buddhism and teach you the fundamentals of Buddhist meditation\, and give you the tools you need both to begin a daily meditation practice and to deal with problems and difficulties once you have started to meditate. \nBeginners are welcome and encouraged\, as well as more advanced students wanting to review the “steps on the path” in an experiential format. \nAmie Diller is a Buddhist teacher in both the Tibetan and Zen traditions. A mother and midwife\, she has also had a longtime interest in Jungian Psychology and the mythic perspective. \nHeather Breault started practicing yoga in 2001\, which lead her to find Buddhism\, with her first class taught by Lama Marut in 2008. She has studied with many amazing teachers over the years\, her closest teacher being Amie Diller. \nTuesdays\, December 29\, 2020 and Tuesday\, January 5\, 2020.\n6:30pm-8:30pm PDT\nOnline ; Donation-based\nZoom Meeting ID: 224-735-8115\nhttps://us04web.zoom.us/j/2247358115 \nwww.diamondlightsac.org/donate or “Diamond Light” on Venmo\nSuggested donation: $10-:$20 to cover expenses\, which include ongoing rent for our Center\, fees to provide online services and supporting our teachers\nNo one turned away due to lack of funds.

SUMMARY:The Intrinsic Freedom of the Mind Itself with James Low
DESCRIPTION:Our mind is intrinsically clear\, but becomes cluttered by thoughts. Join James Low as gives an introduction to Dzogchen\, and discusses the difference between the mind and contents of the mind\, so we can practice directly experiencing the clarity of mind. Through this dharma talk\, we will gain an increased sense of how the mind is self-purifying through the self-liberation of whatever arises. \n10:30am-12:30am Saturday September 5th (California time)\nOnline through Zoom: Register to get the login info\nCost: suggested donation $10-$40 to support our teachers and cover the costs of the event.\nTo register: https://bookwhen.com/diamondlightsac#focus=ev-svss-20200905103000 \nJames Low is a disciple and teacher in the Byangter and Khordong lineages of the late Chhimed Rigdzin Lama.\nHe began studying and practising Tibetan Buddhism in India in the 1960’s and received teachings from Kalu Rinpoche\, Chatral Rinpoche\, Kanjur Rinpoche and Dudjom Rinpoche. Having met his root teacher\, Chhimed Rigdzin Lama (also known as C R Lama)\, he lived in his home in West Bengal\, India for many years\, serving him as required and being taught many aspects of the tradition. During this period in India James did several retreats and pilgrimages in the Himalayas. In the 1970’s and 1980’s\, on his return to Europe\, he also had teachings and guidance from Namkhai Norbu Rinpoche.\nJames translated many tantric texts and sadhanas with CR Lama who wanted texts from his lineages\, Byangter and Khordong\, to be available in English. These are used as practice texts by CR Lama’s disciples and have been translated into various European languages.\nCR Lama asked James to teach in 1976 and later gave him the transmissions necessary to do this\, together with full lineage authority. In particular\, James was encouraged to give the traditional instructions using methods that enable people in the west to get the point. James has been teaching in this way for over twenty years.\nJames regularly teaches the principles of dzogchen in Europe and he publishes translations and commentaries from time to time.\nMany of his seminars have been recorded\, transcribed and made available on this website in the hope that they may be useful for those seeking to deepen their dharma understanding and to explore how to apply it in the complexities of everyday life.\nJames studied at Edinburgh and other universities and has retired from his work in London as a Consultant Psychotherapist in the National Health Service. He is slowly winding down his private psychotherapy practice. He has taught on many psychotherapy trainings in Britain.
