SUMMARY:A Language of Compassion
DESCRIPTION:The psychologist\, Marshall Rosenberg\, identified specific forms of language and communication that he believed contributed to our behaving violently toward each other and ourselves. Marshall proposed that these forms of communication cut us off from our natural state of compassion. Marshall created an alternate form of communication\, called Nonviolent Communication (NVC)\, that helps us stay connected with our humanity even in trying situations.\nIn this daylong\, we will introduce the basic principles and practices of NVC through a combination of theory and experiential exercises. We will apply this compassionate way of communicating within the group to gain a direct experience of the power of this approach. \nAt Diamond Light Meditation Center\n2791 24th Street\, Room 14 (upstairs)\nSacramento CA 95818\nparking lot in back\, ADA accessible \nCost: $20-$60\, no one turned away for lack of funds \nTo register: email diamondlight.sac@gmail.com\npay at the door\, or to pay online: http://www.diamondlightsac.org/donate/\nscholarships available! email for more info \nAbout the instructor: Sunil Joseph has been a student of NVC since 2004. He attended BayNVC’s Leadership program in 2008 where he learned to share NVC with others. Sunil is passionate about sharing his appreciation for NVC with others.

SUMMARY:The Three Turnings of the Wheel of Dharma with Pamela Rasada
DESCRIPTION:The Three Turnings of the Wheel of Dharma – Why They Are Each Essential to All of Us \nBuddhist often refer to the Three Turnings of the Wheel when discussing the teachings of the Buddha. What does this really mean? What are the three turnings? During this three week lecture/discussion\, Pamela Rasada will lead participants through an exploration of the three turnings using an article by professor Jay L. Garfield as the foundation of the discussion. In his 2011 article\, “The Three Turnings of the Wheel of Dharma – Why They are Each Essential to All of Us”\, Garfield describes the misconceptions often held about the three turnings and details the intrinsic value of the teachings within each turn. \nUsing the article as a guide\, participants will explore and discuss each turning\, identify the contradictions emerging within each turn\, and seek to understand how to resolve them and re-frame them as complementary rather than competitive. Each weekly class will focus on one turning of the wheel through meditation\, a brief lecture clarifying the topic\, and an open discussion/Q&A. Weeks two and three will include a brief review of the material presented in the previous weeks. All are welcome to join in the discussion. \nWhat is the speech of the Buddha?\n“The speech of the Buddha is anything spoken directly by the Buddha\, anything inspired directly by the Buddha\, anything spoken in the presence of the Buddha and approved of by the Buddha\, or anything that is fully consistent with the intent of the Buddha.” ~Prajñāpāramitā Sūtras \n3 Tuesdays April 23-May 7; 6:30pm-8:30pm \nAt Diamond Light Meditation Center\n2791 24th Street\, Room 14 (upstairs)\nSacramento CA 95818\nparking lot in back\, ADA accessible \nwww.diamondlightsac.org \nSuggested donation: $10-$20 per class\, No one turned away for lack of funds. Pay online: http://www.diamondlightsac.org/donate/\, or check/cash at the door. \nPamela Rasada is a student of the lineage of His Holiness the Dalai Lama\, in the Tibetan Gelugpa tradition\, in June of 2011. Through her primary teacher\, Amie Diller\, Pamela has had the opportunity to meet and study with many experienced and practiced teachers. In February 2018\, after seven years of classwork and study\, Pamela completed an eighteen course Gelugpa intensive. Pamela continues to explore additional opportunities to learn and is grateful for any opportunity to share what she has learned with others. \nPamela graduated from Sonoma State University with majors in Nursing and Philosophy and minors in Women’s Health\, Music\, Biomedical Ethics\, and Logic. Upon graduation she was accepted into the Jesse Marvin Unruh Assembly Fellowship Program. She continues to work in public service\, loves reading year-round and enjoys paddle boarding with her companion Chuck-the-Wonder-Dog in the warmer Sacramento months.

SUMMARY:How to be Happy with Elaine Jackson
DESCRIPTION:Join Elaine Jackson as we explore the 12-links of dependent origination\, how we create suffering for ourselves each day\, and how we can break free from the cycle! Happiness\, like suffering is in our mind. When we engage in the patient observation of our thoughts\, feelings\, emotions and mental images\, or any object of the mind\, we come to see they are not real things. They arise because they have been entertained in the past. \nTo begin developing new habits requires radical re-thinking – radical re-doing. It requires stepping outside our everyday life patterns into moments of quietude. It requires mental re-training through which we can transform our attitudes\, positively shape our minds\, gain confidence to tackle the problems created by disturbing emotions and awaken to an enlightened state. \n“The awakening mind is the root of all happiness and peace in the entire universe\,” says His Holiness the Dalai Lama. \nSaturday 2/9/2019 10am-1pm \nAt Diamond Light Meditation Center\n2417 24th Street Room 14\, Sacramento CA 95819\nParking lot in back\, ADA accessible \nwww.diamondlightsac.org \nSuggested donation: $40-$60 No one turned away for lack of funds. SUMMARY:Escaping Uncertainty\, a Study of Buddhist Ethics with Heather Breault
DESCRIPTION:The Buddha taught that to reduce suffering and live a happy life\, you must watch your actions and live a life of virtue. Luckily\, he laid out a code of ethics to follow that would do just that. \nIn a world where morality seems to be declining\, in this course will learn the reasons to choose an ethical life. How this leads to deeper happiness and fulfillment\, and ultimately freedom from suffering. \nThe Ethical Life covers the Buddhist code of ethics and the relationship between an ethical way of life\, meditating deeply\, and experiencing ultimate reality. \nTopics include: the three trainings; one day vows; the five lifetime lay vows; the individual freedom vows; an outline of novice\, intermediate\, and fully ordained monastic vows; the essence of vows; the basic nature of vows; reasons to live an ethical life; reasons to take vows; why morality is the key to meditation and seeing emptiness directly; how to keep vows from being damaged; how vows are lost; the specific karma resulting from each of the ten non-virtues; how to find a teacher; the characteristics of a qualified teacher; taking refuge; the four forces of karmic purification; the four truths; and the six perfections. \nThis class is for students who have taken introductory Buddhist classes. Heather’s passion is the Tibetan Gelugpa tradition\, in the lineage of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. She recently finished a six year\, eighteen course intensive and is excited to share these classes with others. \nHeather grew up in Northern California and received her Bachelor of the Arts in Communication at San Diego State University. SUMMARY:Hurry Up and Wait: Radical Meditation for Modern Times with Keith Dowman
DESCRIPTION:Looking to deepen your meditation practice or learn new meditation techniques? Join Keith Dowman as he leads us through the principles of the Dzogchen path\, a profound and effective tradition of teachings in Tibetan Buddhism enabling us to attain perfect enlightenment for the benefit of ourselves and all living beings. \nConsidered to be the heart of all Buddhist teachings\, Dzogchen has been practiced throughout history by masters of all different schools of Buddhism\, including by the current Dalai Lama and his predecessors. \nThe Dzogchen view and meditation recognize the perfection of the here and now\, regardless of one’s emotional or intellectual state of mind\, inducing satisfaction in the moment by demonstrating the non-duality of reality. There is no distinction between the goal and the starting point\, and each moment achieved is also an achievement of the goal. \nThis weekend seminar will include teachings and meditations. \nSaturday and Sunday October 13 and 14\, 10:00am-4:00pm (with a lunch break)\nat Diamond Light Meditation Center\n2791 24th Street\, Room 14 Sacramento CA 95818\n[upstairs\, ADA accessible\, parking lot in the rear]\ncost: $100-$150 for full weekend. Scholarships available\, please email diamondlight.sac@gmail.com for information. \nPlease pre-register here: https://goo.gl/forms/1nrSRywgkfrT7tfs2 \nWe encourage attendees commit to the entire weekend. \n \nKeith Dowman\, a cultural exile from England\, has spent his life since the mid-sixties living in India and Nepal. During this time he has led a renunciate lifestyle within the ethos of Dzogchen which he learned primarily from the first generation of Nyingma Lamas to teach and practice outside of Tibet\, in particular Dudjom Rinpoche and Kanjur Rinpoche. He is familiar with the Tibetan Literary Language and has translated a battery of Dzogchen texts which are both manuals and poems of realization. He teaches “Radical Dzogchen” which embodies the essential Dzogchen view and meditation and yet is free of cultural embellishment. Living a nomadic lifestyle\, Keith has taught in Asia\, Europe\, and America’s since the early 1990s.

SUMMARY:Our Shared Humanity - with Sunil Joseph
DESCRIPTION:In response to the busyness of our lives\, we operate in doing-mode which is often disconnected from beingness. When our tasks are done\, it can be difficult to let go of the doing\, relax and drop back into being human again. Our humanity can feel uncomfortable\, vulnerable\, and unpleasant with all its complexity and messiness. When we are disconnected from our own humanity\, it is difficult to connect with the humanity in others. We can end up objectifying ourselves and others. This\, in turn\, can lead to a sense of isolation and even fear. \nIn this class\, we will use experiential practices to slow down and contact our humanity. We will draw on multiple mindfulness and compassion based approaches\, including Marshall Rosenberg’s Compassionate Communication and Kristin Neff’s Self Compassion Break\, to deepen into our heart space. The shared field and presence of the group will support us in entering the world of feeling and sensing in a safe and supported way. Using contact with ourselves as a support\, we will explore the realm of empathy and shared/common humanity. The field of shared humanity has the power to inspire a natural trust and relax our nervous systems. \nThe class will primarily be experiential with just enough theory to support our exploration. All are welcome. No prior experience is necessary. All the teachings are offered for free as our mission is to serve everyone regardless of means. For those who can afford it\, we would appreciate a $10-$20 donation per class. \nSunil Josef: I started studying Nonviolent Communication (NVC) in 2004. NVC has had a transformational effect on my professional and personal life. I am continually amazed at the power and simplicity of this way of living life. While I am not a certified NVC trainer\, I am happy when the fruits of my personal practice can benefit others. I consider myself a lifelong NVC learner and explorer.

SUMMARY:Meditations for Cultivating Stillness and Revealing Insight - with Doug Veenhof
DESCRIPTION:The close observation of individual moments of experience combined with inquiry can reveal experiential insights about the nature of the self\, the mind\, and the world of phenomena that have greater transformational power than conceptual analysis alone. Join Doug Veenhof as we examine how these empirical insights are what actually cut through the subtlest obscurations to Pristine Awareness. \nThis “fusion of shamatha and vipashyana\,” as Tsongkhapa calls it\, is presented within the context of Dzogchen\, Tibetan Buddhism’s Great Perfection. Participants will learn why the still awareness achieved with shamatha practice is essential before experiential wisdom can flourish. \nThis weekend retreat will be organized into one-hour modules that begin with instruction on a progression of meditation techniques designed to produce the effortless stillness and vividness of mind achieved with shamatha practice and then apply that single-pointed focus to an investigation of individual moments of experience. Each one-hour module also includes a guided meditation and a period of silent\, self-guided meditation to integrate the new practice as your own to take home . \nParticipants will learn a full range of shamatha practices\, from breath meditations to Taking the Mind as the Path\, and Awareness of Awareness. These latter practices will feature a new \, very effective approach that Doug learned in his recent two-month retreat with his teacher\, renowned shamatha master Lama Alan Wallace. We then explore the fusion of shamatha and vipashyana with insight practices drawn from the traditions of Dzogchen and Mahamudra. \nThis clear and systematic approach will provide a great foundation for those new to meditation\, and long term practitioners may find that this empirical approach to revealing wisdom is just what they have been missing. \nAt Diamond Light Meditation Center\n2791 24th Street\, Room 14 (upstairs)\nSacramento\, CA 95818\nParking lot in back\, ADA accessible \ncost: $40-$60 one day/$75-$110 one weekend\nScholarships Available (email diamond light.sac@gmail.com)\nTo Register: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/meditation-to-reveal-insight-with-doug-veenhof-tickets-47389636679 \nDoug Veenhof is a former mountain guide\, an award-winning journalist\, author\, and long-time Buddhist practitioner.
