SUMMARY:Healing the Conflict Within
DESCRIPTION:4 Thursdays 3/8-3/29 6:30pm-8:30pm \nDo you sometimes feel like parts of you are at odds with each other? Do you feel stuck or uncertain in specific areas of your life due to these internal conflicts? Do you experience oppressive internal voices that are cruel or painful? \nIn this 4 class series\, we will learn to apply Nonviolent Communication (NVC)\, and other heart centered approaches\, to meet these parts of our self with compassionate presence and listening. When a part is fully heard\, it no longer needs to take our energy. This frees our energy to have more choice in our lives. \nWe will cultivate inner peace in the service of bringing more peace to our world. To the extent we cultivate this quality of compassionate listening within ourselves\, it will flow into our relationships and everyday interactions. \nTo quote Peace Pilgrim – “We can work on inner peace and world peace at the same time. On one hand\, people have found inner peace by losing themselves in a cause larger than themselves\, like the cause of world peace\, because finding inner peace means coming from the self-centered life into the life centered in the good of the whole. On the other hand\, one of the ways of working for world peace is to work for more inner peace\, because world peace will never be stable until enough of us find inner peace to stabilize it.” \nAccording to the Dalai Lama – “World peace must develop from inner peace. Peace is not just mere absence of violence. Peace is\, I think\, the manifestation of human compassion.” \nat Diamond Light Meditation Center\n2791 24th Street\, Room 14 (upstairs)\nSacramento\, CA 95818\nparking lot in back\, ADA accessible \nsuggested donation: $10-$20 per class\, no one turned away for lack of funds \nwww.diamondlightsac.org \nAbout Sunil: I started studying Nonviolent Communication (NVC) in 2004. NVC has had a transformational effect on my professional and personal life. I am continually amazed at the power and simplicity of this way of living life. While I am not a certified NVC trainer\, I am happy when the fruits of my personal practice can benefit others. I consider myself a lifelong NVC learner and explorer.

SUMMARY:Creating a Bright Future - with Ryan Caputi
DESCRIPTION:2 Tuesdays January 2 and 9\, 6:30pm-8:30pm \nCreate a strong intention and vision for your New Year. You will leave with a written statement\, bullet points\, or a paragraph\, of your personal vision and intention for the New Year. You will learn how to incorporate this vision into a meditation practice that can be used to reset your intentions and aspirations throughout the year. \nDuring the first night you will learn the 4-Fold Vision Quest to create a full and hopeful vision of your new year\, and beyond. There will be time to journal and then meditate/envision this image and story of how the New Year will unfold. Everything from our highest aspirations to our worldly goals will be included in this vision. \nDuring the second night you will take this new vision and apply it to the practices of the 4-Immeasurables (loving kindness\, compassion\, feeling joy for others\, and equanimity). You will learn how to extract the meaning and essence of the 4 Immeasurables and apply them to what is most important and relevant in your life. This is a method of personalizing the 4 Immeasurables so that this practice will stay fresh and relevant for years to come. \nBeginners and experienced students are welcome. \nat Diamond Light Meditation Center\n2791 24th Street\, Room 14 (upstairs)\, Sacramento CA 95818\nparking lot in back\, ADA accessible \ncost: suggested donation $10-$20 per class\, no one turned away for lack of funds \nwww.diamondlightsac.org \nRyan has been a student of Lama Amie Diller and Tibetan Buddhism for the past 6 years. SUMMARY:Shamatha and Bodhicitta: Focusing the Mind and Opening the Heart with Emily Hsu
DESCRIPTION:Saturday 11/4 10am-4pm\, with a break for lunch\n\nIn these times\, we are so busy\, constantly rushing and trying to keep up\, checking our phones and email\, and we are becoming more and more distracted. We are less able to focus on the task at hand\, which impairs our ability to do things well – our jobs\, driving\, listening\, sports\, and also spiritual practice. And our minds are more agitated\, speedy\, dissatisfied. Recent research has suggested that people spend as much as 50% of their days in mental distraction. In addition\, a distracted mind is more prone to falling under the sway of disturbing emotions – depression\, anger\, obsession\, fear\, overwhelm – and a focused mind can lead to greater inner peace\, joy and emotional balance. A concentrated mind is also needed to develop deep spiritual realizations. \nIn this daylong we will practice cultivating a focused and calm mind through shi-né (shamatha or calm abiding) practice as well as practices to open the heart and feel a greater sense of appreciation and caring for others\, learning to cherish others more and more. \nBenefits\n• Learn how to develop inner peace and greater emotional balance with the methods of calm-abiding.\n• Reconnect and find joy with your daily practice.\n• Cultivate a greater sense of caring and interconnection with others. \nThis daylong is for all levels\, for anyone who is interested in learning how to focus the mind and open the heart\, as well as for people who want to deepen their existing shamatha practice. \nat Diamond Light Meditation Center\n2791 24th Street Room 14 (upstairs)\nSacramento CA 95818\nparking lot in back\, ADA accessible \nsuggested donation: $20-$60\, no one turned away for lack of funds\nto register: email diamondlight.sac@gmail.com\nscholarships available\, email for more information\ndonate at the door or online: http://www.diamondlightsac.org/donate/ \nEmily Hsu is an FPMT registered teacher who graduated in 2004 from FPMT’s seven year Masters Program of Sutra and Tantra at Istituto Lama Tsong Khapa in Italy. In 2005 she completed a ten-month solitary retreat to integrate the material\, and since that time has mainly been teaching and doing some retreat every year. She taught at Ocean of Compassion (Gyalwa Gyatso) Buddhist Center and other Bay Area centers for ten years\, with the last four years as resident teacher until leaving in 2016 to do longer retreat. \nEmily teaches Basic Program\, Discovering Buddhism\, introductory courses\, meditation\, and leads retreats\, with particular emphasis on emptiness\, bodhicitta\, Lamrim\, and calm abiding (shi-ne or shamatha) meditation.

SUMMARY:Introduction to Compassionate Communication
DESCRIPTION:Introduction to Compassionate Communication \nSaturday\, Oct 21; 10:00 am – 3:30 pm (includes 90 minute lunch break) \nHow do we stay connected to the innate goodness of our basic human nature in the midst of challenging times? Can I make the world a kinder place by changing how I communicate? In this class\, we will introduce the principles and practices of Nonviolent Communication (NVC) to cultivate empathy and compassion. No prior knowledge of NVC is necessary. All are welcome. \nWe will introduce the fundamentals of NVC – Observations\, Feelings\, Needs\, and Requests. We will introduce core NVC distinctions that lead to our freedom:\n– observations vs judgement\n– feelings vs thinking\n– needs vs strategies\n– requests vs demands \nWe will bring non-judgmental awareness to our current communication strategies. We will use NVC tools to shift our attention from right-wrong/reward-punishment thinking to a human needs-centric view. We will introduce practices for cultivating greater felt awareness of our inner world and also learn how to compassionately listen and receive others. We will explore ways to respectfully ask for what we want while also including the other person’s needs. \nTo quote the Dalai Lama – “If you want others to be happy\, practice compassion. SUMMARY:The Life & Mystery of Theos Bernard - Evening Talk & Book Signing
DESCRIPTION:With author Doug Veenhof \nTuesday 9/12\, 6:30–8:30pm\nat Diamond Light Meditation Center\n2791 24th Street\, Room 14 (upstairs)\nSacramento\, CA 95818\nparking lot in back\, ADA accessible \nSuggested donation: $10-$20\, no one turned away for lack of funds \nJoin us for a captivating evening as Doug takes us on a photographic journey through time to Lhasa\, Tibet at the zenith of its Buddhist history. These rarely seen images were shot by Theos Bernard (1908-1947)\, one of the earliest Western explorers of Yoga and Tibetan Buddhist culture\, on his historic journey to Lhasa in 1937. \nAt a time when Tibet’s borders were famously sealed to outsiders\, all of Lhasa’s secret temples and shrines were opened to him\, and Theos Bernard became the first Westerner ever initiated into Tantric practices by Tibet’s highest lamas. \nSelected from what has been described as the best photographic collection of old Tibet in existence\, these images and the adventures they illustrate document an inside view of a now vanished culture. \nDoug Veenhof is an award-winning journalist\, author\, and close student of scholar\, translator\, and master practitioner B. Alan Wallace. Doug is a certified trainer in Cultivating Emotional Balance (CEB)\, a meditation and emotional fluency program created at the request of HH the Dalai Lama by B. Alan Wallace and affective psychologist Paul Ekman. Doug leads workshops and retreats around the world on CEB\, shamatha\, vipashyana\, and Dzogchen.\nwww.douglasveenhof.com

SUMMARY:The Path to Awakening: An Introduction
DESCRIPTION:The Buddha gave us clear instructions on the path to enlightenment\, and all of the teachings of Buddhism can be found within the Lam Rim or “Steps on the Path”. It would take years of study to share the full depth of the Lam Rim\, but this class will provide an overview of the various aspects of the Lam Rim and the teachings embedded within them. \nTaking this class will provide students with a stable foundation upon which to build their knowledge as they continue studying Buddhism. Some students will also find the Lam Rim to be a helpful template in understanding the breadth of the teachings and in identifying areas upon which to focus future studies. \nThis is an introductory class tailored for beginners\, yet all levels of practitioner would likely find the review helpful. \nThis class will include meditation\, dharma talk\, discussion and prayers. There will be handouts including the long and short Lam Rim meditations we will do in class that can be practiced at home! \nTuesday September 5\, 6:30-8:30pm\nDiamond Light Meditation Center\n2791 24th Street\, Room 14 (upstairs)\nSacramento CA 95818\nparking lot in back\, ADA accessible \ncost: Donations Welcome \nFor more info: www.diamondlightsac.org

SUMMARY:Got Empathy? Communicating from the Heart
DESCRIPTION: Got Empathy? Communicating from the Heart\nTwo Tuesdays March 14th and March 28th 6:30pm-8:30pm\nEmpathy dispells separation and other-ness by connecting us to our shared humanity. The ability to “feel with” another is an important precursor for compassion. Join Sunil Josef as we explore the use of Nonviolent Communication (NVC) to cultivate empathy and improve our communication with others. No prior knowledge of NVC is necessary and all are welcome! \nTwo Tuesdays March 14th and March 28th\n6:30pm-8:30pm\nCost: Donation Based \nAt Diamond Light Meditation Center\n2791 24th Street\, Room 14 (upstairs)\nSacramento\, CA 95818\nparking lot in back \nFor more information: www.diamondlightsac.org \nAbout Sunil: I started studying Nonviolent Communication (NVC) with Itara O’Connell in 2004. After attending NVC practice groups with Itara for a few years\, I attended the year-long NVC Leadership Program in 2008 with Bay NVC in Oakland. NVC continues to have a transformational effect on my professional and personal life\, along with other practices like movement\, meditation\, etc. It has deepened the quality of relationships in my life\, with myself and others. After all these years of exploring this work\, I am still amazed at the power and simplicity this approach offers for meeting challenging experiences and interactions in a skillful way. While I am not a certified NVC trainer\, I feel happy when I can contribute to other’s wellbeing by sharing the fruits of my personal practice. I consider myself a lifelong NVC learner and explorer.
