SUMMARY:Cultivating Emotional Balance: Three Day Intensive with Dave Smith and Lani Potts
DESCRIPTION:3-Day Online Retreat \nFriday January 28\, 2022 – Sunday\, January 30\, 2022 \n9am-5pm PDT (9am-12pm and 2pm-5pm) \nPlease plan to attend all days\, no partial retreat available \nRetreat Fees: $300 \nScholarships available\, please email diamondlight.sac@gmail.com to request a scholarship. \nSpace is limited! Preregistration required\, Register now: https://bookwhen.com/diamondlightsac/e/ev-stv2-20220128000000 \nThe Cultivating Emotional Balance (CEB) training was sparked during a meeting between behavioral scientists\, a neuroscientist\, a monk\, a philosopher\, and the Dalai Lama in 2000\, as a new approach to understanding our emotional lives. Combining contemporary emotion based scientific research with contemplative practices and psychology drawn from Buddhism\, the Cultivating Emotional Balance training gives participants new tools to use emotion as a path for transformation. \nJoin an original format for learning and integrating the basic tools of Cultivating Emotional Balance. In this workshop\, participants develop attention\, restore motivation\, identify the root causes of enduring happiness\, explore anger and sadness\, investigate different pathways of empathy\, practice self-compassion\, and build connections through vulnerability and trust. \nOur goal is to support the participants in acquiring tools for cultivating emotional balance in daily life. Your guides are CEB teachers\, Lani Potts and Dave Smith. Together\, they are a dynamic duo with experience teaching the fundamental concepts of CEB. \nDay 1:\n– Lay the groundwork for emotional awareness\n– Learn how to track emotions\n– Cultivate a basis of joy in meditation and stabilize attention in the body. \nDay 2:\n– Investigate the roots and strategies for working with the emotions of anger and sadness\n– Develop mindfulness\, introspection and compassion for your mental and emotional habits. \nDay 3:\n– Explore your internal longing for contentment and flourishing\,\n– Reflect on on genuine well-being and a meaningful life\n– Meditations that establish the clarity of intention and commitment to you and others well-being. \nEach day focuses on learning and practice:\n9am-12pm PDT Emotion Awareness Workshop: \n– Includes powerpoint instruction\, small group breakouts\, activities\, and interactive discussion \n2pm-5pm PDT Contemplative Practice and Meditation: \n– Includes guided practice and instruction on contemplative themes.\n– These sessions will be recorded\n**Can be watched the next morning for those in later time zones. \n As a Dharma practitioner and certified Cultivating Emotional Balance teacher\, Lani Potts also brings to CEB her training and experience as a yoga and meditation teacher along with a long-established Buddhist meditation practice. Lani is a recently retired educator with over 38 years of experience as an elementary teacher\, principal\, teacher and administrator coach\, and Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction. In her “retirement\,” Lani actively teaches CEB\, coaches CEB teachers and students\, and serves as the Cultivating Emotional Balance Program Director. She also teaches mindfulness and meditation as part of a UCSF study on mindfulness with cancer patients and lives in San Jose\, California. \n Dave Smith is an internationally recognized Buddhist Meditation teacher\, addiction treatment specialist\, CEB trained teacher\, and published author. He has extensive experience bringing meditative interventions into jails\, prisons\, youth detention centers and addiction treatment facilities. Dave teaches residential retreats and classes\, provides training and consulting in both secular and Buddhist contexts and works with students through his meditation mentoring program. He recently founded the Secular Dharma Foundation and lives in Paonia\, Colorado.

SUMMARY:Online: Grounding and Connection with Sunil Joseph
DESCRIPTION:Since PD (Physical Distancing)\, I find it nourishing to pause\, ground and connect with others online. The sense of dropping in with ourselves\, others and feeling our shared humanity can feel soothing and restorative. I would like to think we are engaging our Social Nervous System through these practices.http://www.boazfeldman.com/EN/Links_files/PORGES%20Polyvagal_Theory.pdf \nIn the first hour of this event\, I will be offering a 30 – 45 minute guided meditation for grounding and arriving in the present. I am in a Mindfulness Meditation teacher training program with Tara Brach and Jack Kornfield. I will be sharing primarily from that stream. We will have some time after the meditation to hear from each other. In the second hour of the event\, I will offer a 30-minute session on connecting with our feelings and needs based on Marshall Rosenberg’s NVC process. It is a chance to connect with our hearts to find what would really nourish us right now. \nWe will use these documents for the NVC exercise.https://www.cnvc.org/training/resource/feelings-inventoryhttps://www.cnvc.org/training/resource/needs-inventory \nI will be closing the Zoom room 5 minutes after the event starts to avoid disruptions to the group. Feel free to drop after the meditation. If something I offer does not work for you\, you are encouraged to adapt/modify it to fit what you need. Thank you for being a part of this experiment! \nIf you can make a donation ($5 – $20) with ease and joy\, please contribute to my favorite sangha – \nhttps://www.diamondlightsac.org/donate/ \nThey are a volunteer-run sangha with a big heart.

SUMMARY:The Intrinsic Freedom of the Mind Itself with James Low
DESCRIPTION:Our mind is intrinsically clear\, but becomes cluttered by thoughts. Join James Low as gives an introduction to Dzogchen\, and discusses the difference between the mind and contents of the mind\, so we can practice directly experiencing the clarity of mind. Through this dharma talk\, we will gain an increased sense of how the mind is self-purifying through the self-liberation of whatever arises. \n10:30am-12:30am Saturday September 5th (California time)\nOnline through Zoom: Register to get the login info\nCost: suggested donation $10-$40 to support our teachers and cover the costs of the event.\nTo register: https://bookwhen.com/diamondlightsac#focus=ev-svss-20200905103000 \nJames Low is a disciple and teacher in the Byangter and Khordong lineages of the late Chhimed Rigdzin Lama.\nHe began studying and practising Tibetan Buddhism in India in the 1960’s and received teachings from Kalu Rinpoche\, Chatral Rinpoche\, Kanjur Rinpoche and Dudjom Rinpoche. Having met his root teacher\, Chhimed Rigdzin Lama (also known as C R Lama)\, he lived in his home in West Bengal\, India for many years\, serving him as required and being taught many aspects of the tradition. During this period in India James did several retreats and pilgrimages in the Himalayas. In the 1970’s and 1980’s\, on his return to Europe\, he also had teachings and guidance from Namkhai Norbu Rinpoche.\nJames translated many tantric texts and sadhanas with CR Lama who wanted texts from his lineages\, Byangter and Khordong\, to be available in English. These are used as practice texts by CR Lama’s disciples and have been translated into various European languages.\nCR Lama asked James to teach in 1976 and later gave him the transmissions necessary to do this\, together with full lineage authority. In particular\, James was encouraged to give the traditional instructions using methods that enable people in the west to get the point. James has been teaching in this way for over twenty years.\nJames regularly teaches the principles of dzogchen in Europe and he publishes translations and commentaries from time to time.\nMany of his seminars have been recorded\, transcribed and made available on this website in the hope that they may be useful for those seeking to deepen their dharma understanding and to explore how to apply it in the complexities of everyday life.\nJames studied at Edinburgh and other universities and has retired from his work in London as a Consultant Psychotherapist in the National Health Service. He is slowly winding down his private psychotherapy practice. He has taught on many psychotherapy trainings in Britain.
