DESCRIPTION:In this course\, we will explore how to use mind training techniques to transform our problems into causes for happiness. According to Buddhism\, it is primarily our minds that determine whether we will experience happiness or pain and difficulties\, and problems are excellent opportunities to make spiritual progress. We will discover the source of our problems and thereby be able to reduce them\, discuss how problems can be transformed into causes for our own happiness and\, in turn\, lead to our ability to cherish and support others more naturally and effectively. \nWe will learn meditations as well as other techniques which can be used throughout our day to help create the transformation and happiness we seek. In 2005 she completed a ten-month solitary retreat to integrate the material\, and since that time has mainly been teaching and doing some retreat every year. She taught at Ocean of Compassion (Gyalwa Gyatso) Buddhist Center and other Bay Area centers for ten years\, with the last four years as resident teacher until leaving in 2016 to do longer retreat. \nEmily teaches Basic Program\, Discovering Buddhism\, introductory courses\, meditation\, and leads retreats\, with particular emphasis on emptiness\, bodhicitta\, Lamrim\, and calm abiding (shi-ne or shamatha) meditation.

It is said that\, of all the Buddhist realizations and practices\, the most essential is bodhicitta. Tibetan Buddhist art is created using Buddhist symbolism to represent certain aspects of the dharma. Buddhist figures and sacred objects tend to be esoteric and symbolic in meaning. Mudras are symbolic hand gestures that describe the action of the figures. Many images function as mandalas. \nBuddhist art often makes use of the “Eight Auspicious Symbols.” These symbols are:\n1.	Lotus flower – representing purity and enlightenment.\n2.	Endless knot\, or\, the mandala – representing eternal harmony.\n3.	Pair of goldenfish – representing conjugal happiness and freedom.\n4.
